HKUST has launched a HK$100 million RAISe+ Project Fund to support HKUST projects under the Government’s Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+). Capitalized through the University’s equity holdings in earlier HKUST start-ups, the Fund will help turn promising research into practical applications.

Speaking at the launch ceremony today October 16, Prof. SUN D**g, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, commended HKUST’s active participation in RAISe+. He noted that the new Fund complements the Government’s efforts, helping promising projects progress from research and development towards practical applications. He added that this also aligns with the direction set out in Hong Kong’s First Five-Year Plan, which emphasizes strengthening basic scientific research capabilities for original innovation and the role of institutions in attracting and cultivating talent for technological innovation.

Also at the ceremony, Three HKUST Engineering faculty members whose projects have received RAISe+ funding shared how the Scheme strengthens the credibility of their research and supports their commercialization efforts:

Prof. SU Hui
• Chair Professor in Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
• Co-founder of Stellerus, an AI meteorological technology startup

Prof. SUN Qingping
• Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
• Co-founder of CoolStar, a startup specializes in green elastocaloric cooling and heating technology

Prof. Terence WONG
• Associate Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
• Founder of PhoMedics, a medical imaging tech startup

Launched by the Innovation and Technology Commission, the HK$10 billion RAISe+ Scheme supports strategic research and development projects with strong potential for real-world impact. HKUST leads all local universities with 19 funded projects out of the 73 awarded across the Scheme’s first three funding rounds. HKUST School of Engineering alone accounts for 13 of these projects.

A research team led by Prof. SHEN Yajing from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, with first author Dr. TANG Yifeng, has developed EmArm — a robotic arm that integrates soft tactile “skin” with real-time motion control. From interpreting human touch interaction to navigating around unseen obstacles, EmArm turns whole-arm sensing into adaptive action.

The research has been published in 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙨.

Congratulations to the HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team on clinching Second Runner-Up in the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2026 Undergraduate Section, organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Hong Kong.

Supervised by Prof. Tim WOO, Director of the Center for Global & Community Engagement, the team brought together four female undergraduates from different engineering disciplines and countries/regions: LAW Yuan (Computer Engineering) from Malaysia, Minche LEE (Bioengineering) from Korea, Selma REBLITZ (Mechanical Engineering) from Germany, and YIP Yee-Lam (Electronic Engineering) from Hong Kong SAR. The team stood out among 27 undergraduate teams with their project “Engineering Impact Below the Surface: ROV Marine Monitoring & Exploration”.

In Stanford University’s latest World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking, 15 HKUST Engineering faculty members have been recognized among the global top 10 in their respective fields across both single-year and career-long impact.

More than 240 HKUST faculty members, representing approximately 40% of the University’s tenure-track scholars, were recognized on this prestigious list, highlighting HKUST’s sustained academic excellence on the global stage.

Held at HKUST, the three-day International Electrochemistry Summit 2026 featured over 50 renowned electrochemistry scholars as speakers and drew around 300 participants from academia and industry.

Jointly hosted by HKUST and the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences (YASHK), the Summit exchanges on cutting-edge topics, including AI applications in electrochemistry and new sustainable battery technologies, fostering collaboration to advance the future development of electrochemical technologies.

Congratulations to Prof. XIE Yuan, Fang Professor of Engineering, and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, together with his co-authors, on receiving the prestigious 2026 ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation. As one of the highest honors in the EDA field, the award recognizes Prof. Xie’s foundational work on magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) and 3D-integrated memory architectures.

Compared with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue processing, which can take up to a week, Glanzir® can generate histological images in just three minutes to support rapid intraoperative diagnosis. Developed by a research team led by Prof. Terence WONG of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Glanzir® is the world’s first AI-enabled, slide-free pathology imaging system and achieves a high diagnostic accuracy of 85%.
