We warmly welcome the newest cohort of research postgraduate students to the HKUST Engineering community. On August 27, over 200 new MPhil and PhD students joined the orientation.

Dean of Engineering Prof. Hong K. LO, Associate Dean (Research & Postgraduate Studies) Prof. George YUAN, and faculty members from six engineering departments greeted the new SENGers and encouraged them to pursue impactful research, while embracing the vibrant life at HKUST and in Hong Kong.

A delicious conclusion to a warm welcome! On the third and final day of the “Welcome Engineering Students” giveaway, our Dean, Associate Deans, Executive Director, and Department Heads met students over lunch with an assortment of sweet and savory pastries.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share a bite and celebrate the start of the new academic year with freshmen and returning Engineering students.

The Future of Low-Altitude Economy Starts Here

What will it take to transform the low-altitude economy from emerging innovation into a commercially viable and globally connected industry?

Join us at the Future of Low Altitude Economy – An Inter-City Dialogue: Commercialization and Standardization on 10 September 2026 at HKUST, where policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, academics, technology innovators, and international experts will come together to explore the next chapter of low-altitude economic development.

The forum will feature keynote speeches, expert panel discussions, and strategic dialogues focusing on:
🔹 Cross-Sector Collaboration to accelerate the development of the low-altitude ecosystem
🔹 Standardization and Global Connectivity, examining how Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area can contribute to international standards for drones, eVTOLs, air traffic management, telecommunications, and safety systems
🔹 Commercialization Pathways, covering practical applications such as urban air mobility, smart logistics, precision agriculture, infrastructure development, regulatory sandboxes, and cross-border operations

A key milestone of the event will be the signing of a joint statement on Hong Kong Low-Altitude Economy Standards, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing industry development and international cooperation.

With distinguished speakers from government, academia, industry associations, telecommunications providers, aerospace organizations, technology companies, and international institutions, this dialogue offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the trends, opportunities, and challenges shaping the future of the low-altitude economy.

How will AI agents connect and collaborate at scale across future communication networks? An HKUST research team led by Prof. Khaled B. LETAIEF, New Bright Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has laid the groundwork for the next frontier of wireless networks with a new framework: Reasoning-Empowered Task-Oriented Communication (TOC).

Published in the 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙥𝙟 𝙒𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮, this research serves as a foundational compass for future 7G networks, moving us beyond simple data transmission toward true collective intelligence.

Research team members include PhD Candidates XIE Songjie and LI Hongru, Dr. WANG Zixin, Prof. SONG Shenghui, and Prof. ZHANG Jun.

Welcome freshmen! And a warm hello to our returning students! 🎉

The Dean of Engineering Prof. Hong K. LO welcomes all students to an exciting year, highlighted by the establishment of the new Department of Materials and deepening partnerships with industry. The School of Engineering is proud to admit over 200 non-local undergraduate students representing 70 countries and regions this semester, while moving full steam ahead with transformative AI for Engineering Education initiatives.

To kick off the new academic year on a sweet note, our Dean, Associate Deans, Executive Directors, and Department Heads had a fantastic time today serving up ice cream and smiles during the 3-day “Welcome Engineering Students” giveaway! 🍦😊 Many of you also stopped by to collect stamp for the University’s “Fire Up Your Year” campaign.
