On 19 May 2026, we were pleased to host the 7th COI Flagship Symposium, “Clinical Immuno-Oncology, Innovative Therapeutics, and Beyond.”

Bringing together leading scientists, clinicians, and global partners, with distinguished participation from international institutions including University Health Network (UHN) and Technical University of Munich (TUM). The symposium fostered rich exchange on the latest advances in immuno-oncology and translational research.

A key highlight was the participation of UHN’s senior leadership, Prof. Kevin Smith, Prof. Bradly Wouters, and Dr. Keith Stewart whose contributions reinforced a long-standing partnership and shared commitment to advancing innovation from discovery to clinical application. We also thank our collaborators from TUM for their valuable scientific contributions, which enriched the programme and broadened international perspectives.
From immune checkpoint therapies and tumour microenvironment research to next-generation cell and gene therapies, the symposium showcased cutting-edge science and emerging therapeutic strategies shaping the future of cancer care.

We sincerely thank our Co-Directors Prof. Tak Mak and Prof. Suet-Yi Leung, Innovation and Technology Commissioner Mr. Ivan Lee, HKU Dean of Medicine Prof. Chak-Sing Lau, all distinguished speakers, collaborators, and participants, as well as Beckman Coulter for their support, in contributing to the success of this meaningful event.

We recently wrapped up our Summer Scientific Retreat, marking the end of COI’s first five-year milestone!

It was an inspiring few days of reflection, planning, and collaboration. We were excited to welcome our partners from University Health Network (Canada) and Technical University of Munich (Germany), including Prof. Tracy McGaha, Dr. Steven Chan, Prof. Naoto Hirano, Prof. Jürgen Ruland along with their associates.

The retreat featured various Principal Investigator led focus meetings, Centre wide discussions and a special Journal Club session with insights into cancer immunotherapy and tumour microenvironments.

A huge thanks to everyone who’s been part of this journey—we’re proud of what we’ve achieved and excited for what’s next!

We had the pleasure of co-hosting the first joint symposium with HKU Medicine and Institute for Immunology Tsinghua University, titled “Innovations in Immune Regulation, Neuroimmune Mechanisms, and Clinical Interventions.”

Held on August 15, 2025, the event brought together 18 distinguished speakers and attracted over 180 attendees across the institutions, fostering rich academic exchange on the intersection of the nervous and immune systems in health and disease.

From immune cell therapies and autoimmune regulation to neuroimmune crosstalk and gut–brain interactions, the symposium showcased groundbreaking research and promising therapeutic strategies.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to COI Co-Directors Prof. Tak Mak and Prof. Suet-Yi Leung, HKU Dean of Medicine Prof. Chak-Sing Lau, Tsinghua University Medicine Executive Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hai Qi, all our speakers, and every participant who contributed to the success of this meaningful event.

Earlier this year, COI successfully hosted its 5th Symposium “Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment: Breakthroughs and Innovations,” bringing together over 300 attendees, including leading scientists, clinicians, and industry experts to discuss the latest advancements in cancer immunotherapy.

The symposium featured an esteemed lineup of speakers, including Prof. Mark M. Davis, Prof. Hai Qi, Prof. Qiang Pan Hammarström, Prof. Stephen Schoenberger and Prof. Lisa Butterfield, who showcased their pioneering research on immunotherapy strategies, tumour immunity, and breakthrough treatments. Engaging panel discussions and poster sessions further highlighted cutting-edge discoveries and future directions in the field.
