A simple change in how a vaccine is delivered could make a big difference in the immune protection.
In a new study published this week in the European Journal of Immunology, our lab tested a murine cytomegalovirus-based COVID-19 vaccine in mice and found that giving it through the nose or by injection led to very different immune responses.
The delivery route shaped how strong and how fast the immune response was — and where protective immune cells settled in the body, especially in the lungs.
These findings point to a promising strategy for designing smarter vaccines against respiratory viruses like COVID-19.

Jedna jednostavna promjena u načinu primjene cjepiva može napraviti veliku razliku u imunološkoj zaštiti.
U novoj studiji objavljenoj ovaj tjedan u European Journal of Immunology, naš laboratorij je testirao cjepivo protiv COVID-19 temeljeno na mišjem citomegalovirusu i otkrio da primjena kroz nos ili injekcijom izaziva vrlo različite imunološke odgovore.
Način primjene utjecao je na to koliko je imunološki odgovor bio snažan i brz — ali i na to gdje su se zaštitne imunološke stanice “smjestile” u tijelu, posebno u plućima.
Ovi rezultati upućuju na obećavajuću strategiju za razvoj pametnijih cjepiva protiv respiratornih virusa poput COVID-19.
