How to Specify Remote Management Requirements for Industrial IoT Devices in Utility Tenders

🧠 A practical guide for utilities, DSOs and system integrators on how to define firmware updates, configuration backup, diagnostics, access control and auditability before buying industrial IoT devices.

👉 Industrial IoT devices used by utilities are no longer simple communication accessories. Routers, modems, gateways and data loggers installed in substations, meter cabinets, pumping stations or remote industrial sites become operational assets. If they cannot be updated, diagnosed, secured and managed remotely, the utility inherits avoidable field visits, weak configuration control and long-term security risk.

🛠 For procurement teams and IT/OT managers, this creates a practical problem. Tender documents often specify cellular technology, interfaces and environmental ratings in detail, but remote management requirements remain vague. Phrases such as “remote management support required” are not enough.

🚀 For buyers, the important point is not to treat remote management as an optional extra. Whether the project uses WM Systems equipment or another vendor’s devices, the tender should define how the fleet will be configured, updated, diagnosed, secured and supported over its full operating life.

The Retrofit Path to Smart Water Metering: Upgrade Without Replacing Everything

How utilities can achieve smart water metering fast—without replacing millions of working meters.

🧠 Most utilities still believe they have only two options:
do nothing—or replace every water meter.
Both are expensive in their own way.
But in 2026, that assumption is outdated.

🚀 Thanks to low-power cellular IoT and smart retrofit technologies, there is now a third path—one that delivers smart water metering, leak detection, and remote reading, without the massive cost and disruption of full meter replacement.

🛠 Upgrade your existing meters without replacement.
👉 Discover how retrofit + cellular IoT can transform your water network.
👉 Discover how smart water metering works and why retrofit + cellular IoT is the fastest, most cost-effective path for utilities in 2026.

The High Cost of Low Prices: Why Cheap Smart Meter Modems Are a Budget Trap

⚡ When utilities choose the cheapest smart meter modem, they often pay for it later—in failures, truck rolls, and lost data integrity.

🚀 Over the last few years, utilities across Europe, LATAM, and emerging markets have faced aggressive offers from ultra-low-cost Asian suppliers. On paper, the specifications look similar: LTE Cat.1, RS485, DLMS compatibility. The price difference can be dramatic.
But in smart metering, the modem is not a commodity. It is the device that keeps the meter connected to the Head-End System (HES), maintains security compliance, and guarantees data integrity.

🧠 In smart metering, the modem is not a commodity add-on. It is the digital lifeline of the meter.
Public tenders that prioritize the lowest purchase price often shift risk into operations. Field failures, cybersecurity upgrades, and truck rolls quickly erase initial savings.

Case Study at EVN Macedonia: Secure LAN-Based meter communication via Industrial DIN-Rail Router

🚀 Modernizing Utility Metering at EVN Macedonia

We’re excited to share insights from the recent case study with EVN Macedonia, a national electricity distribution and supply operator. This real-world deployment demonstrates how industrial-grade communications solutions can transform legacy infrastructure into secure, reliable, and scalable grid assets — without costly meter replacements.

🔧 The Challenge

EVN faced a classic utility modernization issue — fleets of existing RS485 meters with no standardized way to integrate them into an IP-based network while meeting strict utility-grade cybersecurity requirements. Traditional IT routers and cellular modems either lacked industrial interfaces or did not comply with EVN’s security policies.

🛠 The Solution

WM Systems delivered a purpose-built industrial DIN-rail router with secure features.

Industrial routers are no longer “just routers.”

They’re becoming the most strategic compute nodes in Industrial IoT.

Across utilities, manufacturing, and energy systems, engineers are shifting critical logic from the cloud to the edge. And for good reason: real-time decisions, bandwidth reduction, higher reliability, and tighter data security all happen faster when applications run directly on the router.

In our latest article, we explore:

• Why edge processing is outperforming cloud-only IIoT setups

• How running custom applications on routers improves resilience

• What this means for protocol handling, analytics, and automation

• Why app-enabled routers reduce total system cost

• How this shift prepares industrial deployments for the next decade

At WM Systems, we’re already building for this future.

Our upcoming router variant will allow customers to develop, deploy and manage their own applications directly on the device — turning the router into a true intelligent edge unit.

If you're working on advanced IIoT, utilities, remote infrastructure, or industrial automation, this trend will shape your next system design.

What is a Smart Meter Gateway or Modem? - The essential communication hub that connects electricity meters to utility systems

The way we measure, monitor, and manage electricity is undergoing a transformation. At the heart of this digital shift is a device called the smart meter gateway—sometimes also called a smart meter modem. If you’ve ever wondered what role these gateways play, why they are so important for utilities, or what options exist for retrofitting legacy meters, this article will take you through the essentials.

What is a Smart Meter Gateway?
A smart meter gateway (SMGW) is a communication device that connects electricity meters (and often gas and water meters) to the broader utility network. Think of it as the translator and messenger between your household or business meter and the systems of the grid operator.
The gateway collects consumption data from the meter, encrypts it, and securely transmits it to the energy supplier or distribution system operator (DSO). On the flip side, it can also receive control signals—for example, dynamic tariffs, load shedding instructions, or time-of-use pricing—enabling two-way communication instead of simple one-directional reporting.

Private Utility Networks at 410/450 MHz - Europe’s Low-Band Renaissance, Licences to 2050, and What It Means for Smart Grids

For decades, utilities have wanted three things from wireless: coverage that reaches every last meter, resilience in bad weather and blackouts, and costs that don’t spiral with site counts. The 410/450 MHz bands (sometimes called “LTE-450” or “NR-450”) check all three boxes—and in Europe they’re entering a golden age. With long-dated licences, modern 4G/5G tooling, and a swelling device ecosystem, these private networks are fast becoming the backbone for AMI, SCADA, and load control.

This post maps the state of play, why momentum is accelerating now, and how to factor 450 MHz into your architecture. Spoiler: WM Systems already ships industrial IoT devices with practically any cellular module—including 450 MHz—and we’re long-standing members of the 450 MHz Alliance and partners of Utility Connect (NL) and other 450 MHz licence holders worldwide.

Load Balancing for Charge Point Operators

The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is gaining momentum. Across Europe and around the world, adoption rates are accelerating as governments, automakers, and consumers embrace the shift toward electrified transport. Yet behind the scenes, the success of this transition depends on something less glamorous than shiny new EVs: the ability of charging networks to scale reliably.

At the heart of this challenge is load balancing, a technical solution that enables Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to provide more charging services without overloading the grid or sinking money into costly infrastructure upgrades.

The Self-Optimizing Building
Buildings consume nearly 40% of global energy and are responsible for a similar share of carbon emissions. As climate goals tighten and energy costs rise, facility managers and owners are under increasing pressure to find new efficiencies. But traditional building management approaches often leave savings untapped — because systems are siloed, reactive, and designed for static schedules rather than real-world dynamics.

The solution? The self-optimizing building. By integrating IoT technologies across HVAC, lighting, and occupancy systems, buildings can move from static control to dynamic, data-driven optimization — cutting energy costs, lowering emissions, and improving comfort all at once.
