Hungary's tax rebate system is a significant draw for filmmakers, offering a substantial 30% rebate on eligible expenses. Here’s a breakdown of the key terms, eligibility, and process to benefit from the tax rebate.

Rebate Rate: 30% of eligible Hungarian spend.

Eligible Spend: Up to 25% of the eligible spend can be non-Hungarian spend, qualifying for the 30% rebate.

Type of Subsidy: The rebate is a non-recourse, non-repayable, and non-recoupable cash rebate provided by local corporate taxpayers.

Currency Flexibility: Eligible expenses can be in any currency (USD, EUR, GBP, HUF) and can also be spent outside of Hungary.

Minimum or Cap: There is no minimum spend requirement and no cap per project. Additionally, there is no annual fiscal budget cap.

Eligible Productions
The rebate is available for various types of productions, including:

Service Works: Productions involving a registered Hungarian film production service company.

Co-Productions: These can be European or other international productions with financial and/or creative participation of a Hungarian co-producer.

Hungarian Films: Productions originating in Hungary.

All eligible productions must meet the cultural test criteria!

There are no minimum cost requirements, no mandatory theatrical screening requirements, and no specific completion or delivery requirements.

Registration Process:
To apply for the 30% Hungarian tax incentive, the following steps must be taken:

Hungarian Companies: Only companies registered with the National Film Office (NFO) are eligible to apply.

Foreign Companies: Foreign producers must enter into co-production or service agreements with a Hungarian registered company.

Project Registration: The production must be registered with the National Film Office (NFO).

Filming Registration: The start of filming must also be registered with the NFO.
