Will Bali weather wreck your solar panels?

This is the question we get most from people living near the coast.

Rain is not the problem. A panel is made of tempered glass in a sealed frame, built and tested for heavy rain, hail and storms. In wet season the downpours actually wash off the dirt for you.

Salty air is a real culprit, but it goes after the metal, not the glass. The mounting rails, the bolts, the enclosures. That is solved with corrosion rated aluminium, stainless fixings, and putting the inverter somewhere out of the weather.

What actually has the biggest failure rate is not the panel. It is cheap racking, rusted bolts, sloppy waterproofing around the roof penetrations, and a system nobody maintains after the install.

Good panels will last 30 years or more in this climate. The weather is not the risk. Who built it and who watches it is.

The Wing is one of the nicest villas we have ever put panels on, and you would never guess from the ground that it has solar, it's all but invisible.

The 10 kWp array sits on a flat section tucked behind the main roof. Nothing sticking up over the ridge, nothing facing the entrance, nothing fighting the architecture.

A lot of villa owners tell us they have been holding off because they think panels will ruin the look of the place. Usually there is a roof section nobody ever sees😉

If PLN cuts out, will your solar keep the lights on?

Not always.

A standard grid-tied solar system switches off when the grid goes down, even in full sunshine. That protects anyone working on the power lines.

To keep your property running, you need a hybrid inverter, battery storage, and backup circuits designed around what you actually want to power.

That could be your lights, WiFi, fridge, pumps, or air conditioning. The more you want to keep running, and the longer you need it, the more battery storage you need.

The Samara office in Sanur now runs on 6 kWp of solar and 12 kWh of batteries🎉 An office uses most of its power in the middle of the day. Computers, lights and AC all running exactly when the panels are at peak production. Leaving the batteries to handle light evening loads and occasional blackouts. It's a small system, but it's sized to how the building actually uses power, which is what makes the payback so fast.

Even a small patch of shade can affect what a solar array is producing😮

At our workshop in Sanur, the inverter showed 1.90 kW before we trimmed a small tree casting shade on the panels. After trimming the inverter showed 2.34 kW. That’s a 23% increase in observed output!

This is a clear reminder that shading should be considered during system design and checked as surrounding trees grow.

Just because both quotes have the same number of panels doesn't mean they're comparable.

To make an accurate comparison, lay your quotes out side by side and ask yourself:

• Are they on-grid, off-grid or hybrid systems?
• What equipment is each one using?
• What will the battery actually back up?
• Are all the necessary parts clearly listed and priced?
• Do the quotes cover commissioning, warranties and after-sales support?

You'll quickly find out which one is more trust worthy (even if it costs a little bit more.)
