"What drives me is knowing that I can make a difference, not only for people, but also for the environment, including wildlife and forests. In doing so, I'm also contributing to APRIL's sustainability commitments," says Artauli Agustina Nainggolan (Arta), an Environment Officer in APRIL's Forest Protection team.

Every day, she patrols operational areas and works with colleagues, contractors, government agencies, local communities, and visitors to help ensure forest protection remains a shared responsibility across APRIL's operations.

The role needs strong leadership and communication skills. Arta admits those were not her greatest strengths at first. At APRIL, she found opportunities to build both through:

- Daily team briefings where everyone, regardless of role, shares plans, discusses challenges, and develops solutions together
- Rotating knowledge-sharing sessions that give every team member the opportunity to present and learn
- Assignments that prepare employees for future roles by to taking on responsibilities beyond current role

APRIL Group continued to deliver progress towards its APRIL2030 sustainability commitments and targets in 2025, driving gains across climate action, renewable energy adoption, conservation investment, circular economy initiatives, and community development.

APRIL’s Sustainability Report 2025, themed “Strengthening Impact,” marks a milestone year as the company reaches the midpoint of our APRIL2030 journey. The report reflects a year of recalibration, focused on refining how we deliver our commitments to drive measurable results as the business continues to grow and diversify.

Key achievements in 2025 include:
• Reduced land-use emissions by nearly 40% to 3.0 million tonnes CO₂e since 2019 baseline at Sumatra operations, advancing the pathway toward net-zero land-use emissions by 2030.
• Increased renewable and clean energy to 82% of manufacturing energy demand, and expanded installed solar capacity to 26.3 MW, surpassing earlier targets and raising its long-term solar ambition to 50 MW by 2030.
• Invested US$14.8 million in conservation, supporting conservation and restoration landscapes equivalent to 76 percent of its plantation footprint.
• Improved plantation productivity by 13.8% at the Sumatra operations, effectively boosting fibre output without expanding its plantation footprint.
• Contributed to stunting reduction efforts among children, bringing rates to below 14% across 114 villages in Riau Province.
• Women accounted for 63% of participants in APRIL’s community programs, reflecting strong progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

The year also marked several important milestones for our nature and biodiversity agenda, including the launch of APRIL’s Thriving Nature strategy, a five-year scientific collaboration with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to strengthen evidence-based conservation across our landscape, and the adoption of the TNFD framework to strengthen nature-related risk and opportunity reporting.

We believe everyone deserves an equal opportunity to grow. At APRIL, that starts with access to the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

Through the APRIL Learning Institute (ALI), our dedicated learning and development centre in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, we support employees with Individual Development Plans (IDP), which map out job-specific pathways for how skills are built over time. Each year, we also analyse organisational needs for the year ahead, then design and develop relevant training modules.

Since 2004, ALI has supported more than 90,000 team members across functions, from mill operations to communications, at every stage of their careers. If you believe learning is where growth begins, leave a 👍🏼 in the comments!

Before they become part of our thriving plantations, every acacia and eucalyptus tree begins as a seedling in our nurseries.

To help each seedling grow in a controlled environment, our nurseries use automated sprinklers and humidity measuring devices to maintain the right amount of water and proper acidity levels in the irrigation system. This helps us produce around 200 million seedlings each year.

That technology-driven care continues to make a difference once the seedlings are planted in the field. Stronger seedlings have better survival rates, helping to support a stable fibre supply without requiring additional land, in line with APRIL2030 commitment for Thriving Landscapes.

World Environment Day reminds us that protecting nature requires long-term commitment. At APRIL, this commitment extends beyond our operations through landscape-scale conservation initiatives, including our flagship programme, Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) in Riau, Sumatra.

“Ecosystem restoration requires significant resources, expertise, and time. What makes RER unique is that it is fully funded by APRIL Group, giving us the stability needed to support our work,” says John Pereira, Head of Operations at RER.

With a restoration licence from the Indonesian government, RER protects and restores one of the last remaining tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia, home to more than 900 plant and animal species. RER teams conduct field patrols, carry out ecological monitoring, and collaborate with researchers. Together, these efforts help safeguard both biodiversity and the balance of this unique landscape.

Leave a 🤝 in the comments if you believe protecting the environment requires a long-term commitment we all share!

On World Day for Cultural Diversity, we celebrate the conversations, traditions, and perspectives that strengthen the way we work together.

At APRIL, those moments often come to life during Culture Week, held annually since 2004 at Riau Complex, APRIL’s integrated operations site in Riau, Indonesia. Throughout the week, employees from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds share food, music, traditional attire, performances, and personal stories.

What begins as a celebration becomes a space to learn from one another, build connections, and deepen appreciation for the people we work alongside every day. It is also part of APRIL’s ongoing commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I), fostering a workplace where people feel respected, valued, and included. Water management is essential in pulp and paper manufacturing. APRIL recognises the need to manage water responsibly to protect both ecosystems and local communities.

For use at our mill, water is sourced from the nearby Kampar river under approved permits, and all wastewater is treated before being safely returned in line with regulatory standards.

To support transparency, APRIL uses Indonesia’s SPARING (Wastewater Quality Nonitoring Information System), a government-mandated online monitoring system to get real-time wastewater quality data such as PH levels, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, and wastewater flow. An accredited third-party laboratory also verifies the data each month to ensure accuracy.

“Our aim is for true empowerment, not programmes that foster dependency. By removing constraints, we can help break the poverty cycle and enable communities to reach their full potential,” says Sihol Aritonang, President Director of PT RAPP, the operating arm of APRIL Group.

One programme in Riau Province is helping turn local potential into real economic resilience through seedling provision, continuous mentoring, and improved access to markets. The programme continues to support communities in building more stable and diversified income streams. In 2024, farmers produced up to 26,000 kilograms of bananas and more than 33,600 pineapples, helping position villages in Riau as emerging agricultural production hubs.

As part of APRIL2030, the company’s sustainability commitment to drive inclusive progress, APRIL Group continues to support communities through sustainable livelihood programmes that help strengthen local economic resilience.
