Age is just a number.
IMO sets an age limit to be at 30 years before a vessel needs to be laid off.
However, age often doesn’t represent the real condition of the vessel.
What’s important is whether the vessel has been looked after or not.
Be sure to maintain your vessel properly.

What is seen doesn’t always represent the truth.
A smooth surface, fresh paint, no visible damage don’t actually tells you what is happening inside the tank.
Corrosion works from within. Stress concentrations build up, and temperature differentials inside a tank can accelerate coating breakdown.
By the time the outside shows a problem, the inside has been compromised for a long time.

Do not only blame the rough sea.
Most sinking happen in calm water. At the dock. On a routine crossing.
Cargo overloaded, unequal weight distribution, freeboard ignorance, etc.
Sometimes, the vessel is already compromised before it leaves the berth.
Stability is not something you feel. It is something you calculate.

Ventilation on your tanks is not just accessories.
The absent of ventilation can explode your vessel.
Your cargo produces v***r, v***r builds pressure, and it accumulates explosive concentration.
Proper tank ventilation controls v***r pressure, prevents structural stress on tank boundaries, and keeps the atmosphere inside measurable and manageable.
MARPOL and class rules regulate this ventilation arrangements.

Most people think a sea trial is simple. Well, it is not.
It ranges from engines, steering, navigation equipment, fire fighting systems, life saving appliances, alarms, communication, stability, and more.
Every single system onboard has a test procedure.
That is why the sea trial document is thick.
One signature on that document means every single one of them passed.

How important is a tank inspection?
Docking is the only window you get to inspect what is hidden beneath the waterline and behind closed compartments.
Coating breakdown, corrosion, structural thinning, sediment buildup, and more.
Tank inspection is one of the checklist you would like to tick.

One engine or two?
It will be a decision that shapes how your vessel performs for the next 20 years.
Every operator has different routes, different budgets, and different risk tolerance.
Single engine costs less to build and cheaper to run. But when it stops, so does everything else.
Twin engine gives you redundancy, better maneuverability in tight ports, but it comes at a price.

Not every vessel needs a davit crane for its rescue boat. But some have no choice.
A hand winch works when the freeboard is low, the rescue boat is light, and a small crew can manage the launch safely and quickly.
But as the vessel gets larger, the freeboard rises. The rescue boat gets heavier. And in an emergency, seconds matter.
That is where a davit crane becomes not just practical — but a SOLAS requirement.
The rule is simple: your rescue boat launching arrangement must match the worst condition your crew will face when they need it most.

Loading heavy equipment onto an LCT is not just about getting it on deck.
The ocean doesn’t care how fast you loaded. It only responds to how well you prepared.
Weight distribution, stability, freeboard, lashing points, ballast adjustment — every one of these has to be right before you leave the dock.
One miscalculated axle load. One unsecured machine. One wave from the beam.
That is all it takes to ruin the whole shipment.

It is all depends!
Light oils like diesel flow freely at ambient temperature. No heating required.
Heavy oils like palm oil, bunker fuel, or bitumen are different.
Drop below their pour point and they solidify inside your tank.
The cargo decides the system. Not the other way around.

On an LCT, the action is upfront. But danger can come from behind.
During maneuvering and berthing, your Master needs eyes in every direction — including what’s closing in from the stern.
Other vessels, obstacles, dock structures. A blind spot at the back of the wheelhouse is a risk you cannot afford at slow speed in a confined area.
Rear glass on an LCT wheelhouse is not an afterthought. It is the Captain’s last line of visibility when it matters most.
