We were proud to climb Croagh Patrick in April in support of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation for whom we raised an incredible €10,000 with thanks to the generosity of our colleagues, friends, families and supporters.
The cause was particularly meaningful to our team, as a number of colleagues and their families have experienced the care and support provided by the Hospice in recent years. We wanted to say thank you, raise vital funds, and remember those we have lost.
We climbed in memory of:
Pauline Duffy, Westport and Castlebar
Michael Rice, Castlebar
Eamon Joyce, Castlebar
Eddie Groarke, Swinford
Ted O’Dea, Louisburgh
Ronan Clarke, Killala
A huge well done and thank you to the SDS team members who took on the Reek:
Noreen McDermott, Aoife Rice, Adrian Shortt, Connor Daly, Hannan Khalid, Harry Raghavan, James Cunningham, John Harrington, Kyle O’Neill, Patricia Morrison, Rachel Jordan BEng PMP, Satish reddy Panumati, Tanya Durkan, Danny Groarke
Thank you to everyone who donated, supported and encouraged the team. Your generosity will help Mayo Roscommon Hospice continue providing invaluable care and comfort to patients and families across our community.

We were delighted to be involved in the design of the new state-of-the-art Fire Training Centre at Ireland West Airport Knock which was developed as part of its infrastructure investment, designed to enhance emergency response capabilities.

The facility supports advanced training for airport firefighters and has been used for major emergency simulations involving agencies like An Garda Síochána, Mayo County Fire and Rescue Service, the Armed Response Unit, the National Ambulance Service (NAS), the Irish Aviation Authority, the Air Accident Investigation Unit and the Health Service Executive.

Key Aspects of the Fire Training Centre
Infrastructure: The facility includes modern training towers and equipment for specialized fire tenders.
Training Capabilities: The centre provides specialized training, including breathing apparatus, in smoke-filled, dark, and challenging environments.
Emergency Simulation: The centre is utilized to conduct major emergency exercises on-site to test the readiness of fire services and emergency responders.
Purpose: The facility was developed to ensure high safety standards and train for various rescue scenarios.
Funding: The project was supported by capital funding allocations for regional airports

The airport team and fire service recently took part in a simulation, working alongside several other agencies including An Garda Siochana Mayo and the Armed Support Unit, Mayo County Fire Service, HSE Ireland, National Ambulance Service (NAS), Irish Aviation Authority and the Air Accident Investigation Unit to test the readiness of all teams in their response to a major incident.

A great article The Irish Times outlining that The Building of the Year award was presented to SDS design engineers and their client Lidl Ireland can be read here: https://www.irishtimes.com/advertising-feature/2026/05/18/net-zero-maynooth-supermarket-named-building-of-the-year/.

The judging panel described the collaboration between design and delivery teams as producing a landmark development. “With a strong focus on net zero principles it showcases what is possible when ambition and technical expertise align,” the award citation read.

This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved, and a proud moment to be pushing sustainable design forward as the store is Ireland’s first Net Zero Energy Supermarket.

Key highlights include:
- 575 kWp rooftop solar PV system – 2.5× the standard store size
- On-site battery storage (215 kWh) powering the store for up to 6 hours
- 40% reduction in energy consumption vs. a standard store
- 25% reduction in embodied carbon through sustainable construction materials
- Green travel options including EV charging, e-bike/scooter and cargo bike spaces
- Biodiversity-focused landscaping, green walls and rainwater harvesting systems
- BREEAM Outstanding certification – the highest sustainability rating in construction

A huge shout out goes to every member of the design team, contractor and sub-contractors who helped make this happen:
