In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day, Holly Brennan had the opportunity to attend the Engineers Ireland Women in Engineering Society Annual Conference. It was an inspiring day filled with insightful discussions, practical advice, and honest conversations about the future of women in engineering.
Engineering opportunities for women in Ireland and the UK are comparable to many other countries, but the challenge remains to encourage more young women to choose engineering as a career path.
One message that stood out: you don't have to be a maths genius to become an engineer. Engineering is about curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and understanding concepts - the maths follows. This perspective challenges many of the misconceptions surrounding engineering careers.
Thank you to Engineers Ireland and all the speakers and panellists, including Ann Gordon, Val Fox, Norah Casey, Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, Dr Lollie Mancey and many others for sharing their experiences and perspectives throughout the day,
It's encouraging to see so many conversations focused on attracting and retaining diverse talent within engineering. The future of the profession depends on it!
