This one is for Microalgae Enthusiasts 🌱

This week we had the chance to meet Sneha and Mohammedhosein, winners of the “Best Poster” prize at the School of Biosystems and Food Engineering and also BiOrbic Researchers from the Microalgae group.

In this video, they shared with us some insights about their work. If you are curious to learn more, you can find their contact info on our website 😁

Did you know BiOrbic’s research is founded on 5 Pillars?

Our research is organised across five interconnected pillars, each addressing critical challenges in the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy.

These include:
1) Healthy Ecosystems
2) Climate Neutral Operational Systems
3) Valorisation of waste resources
4) Bioeconomy Systems
5) Enabling Actions

Over the next few weeks we’ll be diving deeper into what these pillars are all about and what research we’ve been developing in our centre to accelerate the deployment of a resilient Irish Bioeconomy

This Valentine’s Day we share our love for circularity by highlighting the love circles of the bioeconomy!

At biorbic, beyond seeing the bioeconomy as part of the economy that uses renewable biobased resources to produce food, feed, materials and energy, we also put emphasis on waste reduction. By pairing these two concepts, we are able to develop circular systems that work towards achieving a sustainable and climate neutral society.

Want to see if your work fits into the circle? Leave your , and in the comments and let’s chat about the endless possibilities of a Circular Bioeconomy.

🌱 From Classroom to National Stage A Young Bioeconomy Researcher 🌱

🎉 Huge congratulations to Arya Satheesh from Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny! She won 2nd Place in the Biological and Ecological category at the Stripe Young Scientist Competition for her project “EcoPurge”, exploring enzyme-catalysed plastic degradation 🧪🌍♻️

Supported by BiOrbic, Arya’s work shows how curiosity and access to research networks can turn ideas into real-world solutions that advance the bioeconomy and a sustainable future.

Special thanks to the Director of BiOrbic, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Prof. Cristiano Varrone and Dr. Virender Kumar at Aalborg University, Prof. Gert Weber and Parinita Singh at Universität Greifswald, and Mary Carr at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) for enabling this award-winning research !

Well done Arya on a great achievement !
