🎓 A LITTLE HISTORY BEHIND THE LOCATION

UCD can trace its origins all the way back to 1854, when the Catholic University of Ireland opened under its first rector, John Henry Newman, at 86 St Stephen’s Green.

Over the following century, the university grew enormously, eventually making its historic move to Belfield.

The main body of faculties and administration relocated there in 1970, helping transform Belfield into the major university campus we know today.

And what a campus it has become.
Set across approximately 133 hectares of parkland, UCD has developed into Ireland’s largest university, with a community drawn from across Ireland and around the world.

🎾🇮🇪 A NEW FLAGPOLE FOR IRELAND’S OLDEST TENNIS CLUB — AS MONKSTOWN PREPARES TO CELEBRATE 150 YEARS! 🇮🇪🎾

There are some projects where you’re not simply installing a flagpole — you’re adding a small new chapter to a very long history.

Poles Apart was delighted to recently complete the supply, delivery and installation of a new premium hinged-base fibreglass flagpole, together with the supply and installation of Monkstown Lawn Tennis Club’s new custom-made flag, at their historic grounds in Monkstown, Co. Dublin.

The installation comes at a particularly exciting time for the club, as it prepares for the official celebrations surrounding its newly redeveloped tennis courts and looks ahead to an extraordinary milestone in 2027 — its 150th anniversary. 🎂🎾

And 150 years of tennis in Monkstown is quite a story…

🏆 IRELAND’S OLDEST TENNIS CLUB

Monkstown Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1877, making it the oldest tennis club in Ireland.

The club actually began on grounds previously used by the County Dublin (Monkstown) Archers, an archery club established in 1846. In its earliest days, Monkstown Tennis Club consisted of just ten gentlemen and ten lady members.

By 1894, Monkstown was one of only 18 clubs affiliated with the Irish Lawn Tennis Association.

The history gets even more interesting.

🎾 In the early years, military bands sometimes played during the club’s social “At Homes”.

☕ Afternoon tea was once a regular part of club life.

⛔ Tennis wasn’t permitted on Sundays until 1941 — and even then players had to finish by 7pm!

🔥 The clubhouse, originally built in 1910, was destroyed by fire in 1973.

🏠 The club recovered and rebuilt, with the replacement clubhouse completed in 1977 — exactly 100 years after the club was founded.

The club survived another serious challenge in 1958, when falling membership and deteriorating facilities brought it close to closure.

A proposal to close was defeated at a General Meeting, and the remaining members rallied together to secure its future.

Nearly seven decades later, it’s fair to say they made the right decision! 👏
🎾 A NEW GENERATION OF COURTS

2026 has brought another major chapter in the Monkstown story.

The club undertook a substantial redevelopment of its six tennis courts, installing new TigerTurf Advantage Clay playing surfaces together with new fencing and associated improvements.

The project was completed ahead of the original programme and on budget, with all six courts returning to play in April.

Further improvements have included new court-side seating, line brushes, shoe brushes, gates and windscreens — creating facilities the club itself has described as being among the newest and best in the country.

Today, Monkstown is a thriving, family-oriented club catering for everyone from complete beginners and social players right through to competitive players and national champions.

The club was also awarded the prestigious Tennis Ireland Gold Clubmark in 2019, recognising the quality, safety and administration of the sporting experience it provides.

🎂 AND NOW… 150 YEARS
Founded in 1877, 2027 marks an incredible 150 years of Monkstown Lawn Tennis Club.

As the club prepares to celebrate that milestone, its new courts represent a wonderful link between 150 years of sporting heritage and the next generation of tennis players who will call Monkstown home.

And standing alongside those new facilities will now be a new Poles Apart premium hinged-base fibreglass flagpole, proudly flying Monkstown Lawn Tennis Club’s own custom-made flag. 🚩

For us at Poles Apart, that’s something we’re genuinely proud to have played a small part in.

Another project completed — this time in Ballycoolin, Dublin 15, where Poles Apart was delighted to work with FIMA Developments on their current project on behalf of Equinix and Winthrop Technologies.

For this project, we supplied, delivered and installed:

🏗️ FIMA DEVELOPMENTS

Founded in 2005 by Mossy and Fiona Lyons, FIMA Developments has grown into an established Irish civil engineering and construction company, working across sectors including data centres, energy and renewables, pharmaceutical and healthcare, commercial and industrial developments, residential construction, and sports and education facilities.

Its capabilities range from site setup and enabling works through to groundworks, underground services, reinforced concrete, earthworks and engineering/surveying.

FIMA also has previous experience working alongside Winthrop Technologies on Equinix developments, including civil and groundworks associated with major data-centre infrastructure in Dublin.

🌐 EQUINIX

Equinix is one of the world’s leading digital infrastructure companies, operating an extensive international network of data centres and interconnection facilities.
Ballycoolin and the wider Dublin 15 area have become an important location for Ireland’s data-centre and technology sector, with Equinix operating significant infrastructure in the area.
Seeing the Equinix flag that we custom supplied now flying alongside the Irish Tricolour is a particularly smart finishing touch to the development.

⚙️ WINTHROP TECHNOLOGIES —
IRISH ENGINEERING ON AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE

Headquartered in Dublin and established in 1995, Winthrop Technologies has developed into a specialist turnkey data-centre delivery partner with operations across Europe.

Its capabilities span design, civil, structural and architectural works, mechanical and electrical construction, through to final commissioning.

It’s a great example of an Irish company developing the expertise and capability to compete internationally in one of the world’s most technically demanding sectors.

🇮🇪 DELIVERING THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO A NEW DUBLIN SCHOOL CAMPUS 🇮🇪

Another Poles Apart delivery completed — this time to ABM Design & Build, currently working on the new Educate Together campus at Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6W.

We DELIVERED within budget and on time:

These three poles are destined for the turning circle at the front of the school, where they will create an impressive and highly visible feature at the entrance to the new campus.

Interestingly, the planning documentation for the site specifically provides for three flagpoles — one 9m and two 7m poles — so it was particularly satisfying to see the exact specification leaving Poles Apart and arriving on site. (Planning Alerts)

🏫 A NEW CHAPTER FOR EDUCATION IN HAROLD’S CROSS

The campus occupies a site many Dubliners will immediately recognise — the former Harold’s Cross Greyhound Stadium.

Today, that land has been given an entirely new purpose as the home of the growing Educate Together school community.

Harold’s Cross Educate Together National School opened in September 2019, initially welcoming just 12 Junior Infant pupils. It has grown year by year and shares the Harold’s Cross campus with the secondary school. (haroldscrossetns.com)
Harold’s Cross Educate Together Secondary School followed in August 2020. Its new permanent building has been designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 students, representing a major investment in education for Harold’s Cross and the surrounding communities. (Education Posts)

The secondary school moved into its new permanent building in May 2026, with further campus works including the sports hall, gym, outdoor areas and basketball courts forming part of the continuing development. (hcetss.squarespace.com)

🌱 FROM GREYHOUND TRACK TO SCHOOL CAMPUS

There is something rather fitting about the transformation of this landmark Harold’s Cross site.
For generations it was associated with racing and sporting crowds. Today, it is being transformed into a modern educational campus that will serve generations of children and young people.

And soon, standing proudly at the entrance will be three premium fibreglass flagpoles delivered by Poles Apart. 🇮🇪

This project was a DELIVERY ONLY contract, with the poles delivered directly to ABM Design & Build for the project.

🇮🇪 A FLAGPOLE WITH A VERY SPECIAL DUTY — ARBOUR HILL, DUBLIN 🇮🇪

Some flagpoles simply fly a flag. Others stand in places where the flag carries the weight of our history.

Poles Apart was privileged to carry out the repair of a 10-meter premium hinged-base fibreglass flagpole at Arbour Hill Cemetery in Dublin 7 — one of the most historically significant and solemn sites in Ireland.

🔧 THE WORK

The existing 10m hinged-base fibreglass flagpole required repair to return it to proper working order.

The hinged-base system allowed the pole to be safely lowered for the necessary work before being returned to service — one of the major advantages of a properly designed hinged-base fibreglass flagpole when future maintenance or repairs are required.

At a location as important as Arbour Hill, the work was carried out with particular care and respect for the surroundings.

🇮🇪 THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF THE LEADERS OF 1916

Arbour Hill is the final resting place of 14 of the executed leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, including all seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic who were executed following the Rising.

Among those buried here are Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke, Seán Mac Diarmada, Thomas MacDonagh, Éamonn Ceannt and Joseph Plunkett, together with Edward Daly, Michael O’Hanrahan, William Pearse, Major John MacBride, Michael Mallin, Seán Heuston and Con Colbert.

Following their executions at Kilmainham Gaol between 3 and 12 May 1916, their bodies were secretly transported to Arbour Hill and buried in an unmarked pit in what was then part of the prison grounds. Quicklime was placed in the grave, and the authorities deliberately kept the burial location from becoming a public focal point.

History, of course, had other plans.

Today Arbour Hill has become one of Ireland’s most important places of national remembrance.

🪨 THE MEMORIAL

The burial place is now marked by a beautifully simple memorial garden.

The remains of the 14 leaders lie beneath a low mound, surrounded by stonework bearing their names in Irish and English.

Behind the graves stands the remarkable curved limestone memorial wall, on which the full text of the 1916 Proclamation is carved in both Irish and English.

The memorial was developed by the Office of Public Works, with the lettering carved by renowned Irish artist and calligrapher Michael Biggs.

🎖️ A CEMETERY WITH AN EVEN OLDER MILITARY HISTORY

Arbour Hill’s history stretches well beyond 1916.

The area has been closely associated with the military for centuries because of its proximity to what was once the Royal Barracks — today Collins Barracks and part of the National Museum of Ireland.

The older section of Arbour Hill Cemetery contains the graves and memorials of British military personnel who died while serving in Dublin during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The adjoining Church of the Sacred Heart also continues its military association as the Church of the Defence Forces.

🇮🇪 ARBOUR HILL TODAY

Arbour Hill remains a living place of remembrance rather than simply an historic cemetery.

Every May, the Annual 1916 Commemoration Ceremony takes place here. It is one of the State’s most important ceremonial occasions, attended by the President of Ireland, members of Government, the Defence Forces, relatives of those involved in the Rising and invited guests.

The ceremony includes military honours and the laying of a wreath at the graves of the executed leaders.

In May 2026, Arbour Hill hosted the 102nd State Commemoration, continuing a tradition which began shortly after the Civil War. The first commemoration took place in 1923, with the first official State ceremony following in 1924.

During the ceremony, the National Colours are raised to full mast at Arbour Hill as the National Anthem is sounded — making the flagpole at this historic site far more than simply a piece of infrastructure.
It forms part of a ceremony of national remembrance.

✈️🇮🇪 A PREMIUM NEW FLAGPOLE INSTALLATION FOR THE MAGELLAN AVIATION GROUP IN THE HEART OF SHANNON’S AVIATION HUB 🇮🇪✈️

Another major aviation-sector project completed by Poles Apart, this time for Magellan Aviation Group at Shannon Free Zone, Co. Clare.

The project began with the decommissioning and removal of three existing rusted metal flagpoles which had reached the end of their serviceable lives.

♻️ Responsible removal and disposal is an important part of our service.

The old metal flagpoles were safely dismantled and removed from site, with the redundant materials handled and disposed of through an appropriate, legal and environmentally responsible process.

In their place, we supplied, delivered and professionally installed:

✈️ MAGELLAN AVIATION GROUP — DEEP ROOTS IN SHANNON

Magellan Aviation Group has a long association with Shannon and the international aviation industry.

Its Shannon operation traces its origins to the early 1990s, when it was established as a subsidiary of the legendary aircraft leasing company GPA. Following ownership changes in the early 2000s, the operation became part of Magellan Aviation Group.

Today, Magellan operates as part of a global aviation trading and logistics network, with operations spanning Shannon, Charlotte in North Carolina and Singapore.

The Shannon facility has an important role within this international network, providing warehousing, logistics, distribution and aviation asset expertise to customers across Europe, North America and further afield.

A particularly interesting part of Magellan’s business involves aircraft and engines approaching the end of their operational lives.

Rather than allowing valuable aviation assets simply to become waste, usable components can be recovered, repaired, certified and returned to service.

That makes businesses such as Magellan increasingly important to aviation’s developing circular economy — extending the useful life of valuable aircraft components while helping to reduce unnecessary waste. ♻️✈️

🌱 MAGELLAN — LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

The future direction of Magellan’s Shannon operation is also particularly interesting.

The company has achieved a Silver EcoVadis sustainability rating, strengthening its environmental and sustainability credentials within the international aviation industry.

Its Shannon operation employs approximately 65 people, encompassing warehousing, global distribution, finance and aviation asset trading expertise.

Looking ahead, Magellan has indicated that it intends to continue improving its environmental performance, undergo annual EcoVadis reassessments and work towards achieving a Gold EcoVadis rating.

With international air travel continuing to grow, airlines and maintenance organisations need dependable access to replacement components.

The ability to recover, overhaul, certify and return existing aircraft components to service therefore has the potential to become even more important — both economically and environmentally.

And Shannon is exceptionally well positioned to be part of that future.

🌎 SHANNON — A SMALL PLACE THAT CHANGED GLOBAL AVIATION

Shannon has been an international aviation pioneer for more than 80 years.

✈️ In 1945, Shannon became Ireland’s first transatlantic airport.

🛍️ In 1947, Shannon introduced the world’s first airport Duty Free Shop — an idea that would subsequently be copied at airports around the globe.

🏭 In 1959, the Shannon Free Zone was established beside the airport.

It became one of the great Irish economic success stories and is widely recognised as the world’s first modern free-trade zone, providing a model that would later be replicated internationally.

🇺🇸 Shannon also became a pioneer in US Preclearance, allowing passengers travelling to the United States to complete US immigration and customs formalities before leaving Ireland.

Today, Shannon Airport continues to play a hugely important role in connecting the West and Mid-West of Ireland with the rest of the world.

More than 2.3 million passengers travelled through Shannon in 2025, its strongest performance in 16 years and approximately 9% higher than the previous year.

And that growth story continues.

For 2026, Shannon’s network is expanding to around 40 routes, providing connections with destinations across the United States, United Kingdom and continental Europe.

Its long runway, 24-hour operations, strategic Atlantic location and extraordinary concentration of aviation businesses around the airport have helped make Shannon one of Europe’s most distinctive aviation centres.

🏘️ SHANNON TOWN — A TOWN BUILT AROUND AN IDEA

Shannon Town itself has a fascinating history because, unlike most Irish towns, it didn’t gradually develop over hundreds of years around a castle, monastery, harbour or traditional market square.

Shannon was planned and built for the future.

The development of Shannon Airport and the Free Zone created thousands of jobs, and during the early 1960s a new town began developing alongside them to provide homes and services for the rapidly growing workforce.

It became Ireland’s first planned new town in more than 200 years.

Shannon Airport, Shannon Free Zone and Shannon Town are therefore all part of the same remarkable story — an ambitious Irish experiment combining aviation, international trade, employment and regional development.

What began on the banks of the Shannon ultimately helped attract businesses and investment from around the world to County Clare.

Rea Refrigeration is a family-run business founded in 1995 by TJ and Mary Rea.

With fully qualified engineers and a fleet of service vehicles, it’s a business that has grown from its Mitchelstown roots while continuing to serve one of the most important industries in rural Ireland.

🏘️ MITCHELSTOWN — A TOWN STEEPED IN HISTORY

Mitchelstown itself has a fascinating story.

Situated in north Cork at the foothills of the Galtee Mountains and in the beautiful Blackwater Valley, the town is one of Ireland’s notable examples of a planned Georgian town, much of its layout having been developed by the Kingston family during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The area’s history stretches back much further, however, with settlement and religious activity in the locality going back many centuries.

Mitchelstown was also once dominated by the magnificent Mitchelstown Castle, rebuilt on a grand scale during the 19th century. The castle was destroyed by fire during the Civil War in 1922, but its story remains an important part of the heritage of the town.

The area also played a significant role during the Land War. The Mitchelstown Massacre of 1887, when three people were killed after police opened fire during a political meeting, became an important event in the wider struggle over land and tenant rights in Ireland.

⛰️ MITCHELSTOWN TODAY

Today, Mitchelstown combines its strong agricultural and commercial heritage with a fantastic location for exploring north Cork and the surrounding counties.

Perhaps its most famous nearby attraction is the spectacular Mitchelstown Cave (booking required), discovered accidentally in 1833 when quarryman Michael Condon dropped his crowbar into a crevice and discovered the vast underground chambers below.
