Across the global aviation industry, the pilot shortage is real. So why are so many newly qualified pilots still finding it difficult to secure their first airline role? ✈️

The answer is more complex than the headline numbers suggest.

While Boeing forecasts that commercial aviation will need 674,000 new pilots over the next two decades, today’s recruitment market is shaped by aircraft delivery delays, regional demand, fleet types, experience levels, and increasingly demanding airline selection criteria.

For aspiring First Officers, this means that earning a CPL (Commercial Pilot License) is an important milestone - but it is not the finish line.

Airlines are increasingly looking for candidates who can demonstrate not only technical flying skills, but also the competencies required to operate successfully in a modern multi-crew airline environment.

Stian Hajem Skaar, Head of Training at BAA Training, explains, “Ultimately, our goal isn't simply to graduate licensed pilots. It's to help them become pilots who are ready to succeed in an airline recruitment process, transition confidently into commercial operations, and ensure overall aviation safety and standards.” 👨🏻‍✈️

In our latest article, we explore why the long-term pilot shortage can exist alongside intense competition for entry-level First Officer positions, where demand is strongest today, and what aspiring pilots can do to stand out.

EMEA’s VIP charter market is finding its rhythm again after a slower start to 2026. ✈️

According to Marton Modis, CCO, VIP Operations at KlasJet, part of Avia Solutions Group, several forces have shaped the market this year:

▪️FIFA World Cup shifting football-related demand toward North America

▪️Fuel volatility, due to the crisis in the Middle East

▪️Changing booking behaviour and geopolitical disruption reshaping traditional routes

One of the clearest shifts has also been what customers value most. With commercial schedules under pressure and fuel prices creating further uncertainty, reliability and transparency are becoming increasingly important, while more first-time private aviation customers are entering the market.

“Because of everything happening with fuel prices and commercial schedules, we’ve seen organizations that would normally fly commercial come to us instead. It isn’t really about price or comfort but about knowing they’ll get where they need to be, when they need to be there,” says Modis.

Other trends shaping the second half of 2026 include stronger demand across Central and Eastern Europe, particularly Poland, a decline in Middle East traffic, fewer last-minute bookings, and growing price sensitivity among repeat customers.

With postponed travel returning and demand from music tours and private groups beginning to recover, KlasJet expects Q3 and Q4 to outperform the same period last year. The company is also looking further east, with plans to reposition an aircraft to the Asia-Pacific region from September to test demand in a new market.

As maintenance workloads become more complex, MRO providers are under increasing pressure to shorten turnaround times without compromising quality or safety. ✈️

According to aviation consultancy IBA, aircraft grounding costs can reach up to $150,000 per day, depending on the aircraft type and level of operational disruption.

Juozas Lapeika, Chief Base Maintenance Officer at Avia Solutions Group subsidiary, FL Technics, explains how faster inspections, earlier diagnostics and in-house technical capabilities can help airlines avoid unnecessary maintenance delays.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:

▪️Unexpected findings, material shortages and additional repair requirements can extend heavy maintenance timelines

▪️Fuel leaks discovered after refuelling may require fuel drainage, tank ventilation, further repairs and repeated testing

▪️Helium-based fuel leak detection can identify potential leak points before final refuelling and testing

▪️Earlier leak detection can reduce turnaround time by four to five days in certain maintenance scenarios

▪️In-house radiographic testing enables teams to assess hidden structural defects without waiting for external equipment or support

Faster inspections support quicker technical decisions and provide greater control over non-routine maintenance findings

▪️Investment in diagnostic technology helps airlines improve maintenance predictability and reduce disruption to fleet operations

Lapeika commented, “Today, airlines are not only looking for maintenance quality - they are looking for predictability and speed. Every unnecessary delay during heavy maintenance creates operational pressure for the customer.”
