Ahead of her attendance at Alaska Federation of Natives - Official Page and Alaska Rural Energy Conference, it's high time to formally introduce ORPC's Alaska Director of Development, Megan Brown.

Megan joined ORPC in August to lead the growth of the Alaska team, and she's already broadening our reach and progressing key river and tidal energy projects throughout the state.

She was born and raised in Anchorage and has family ties to Bristol Bay and the mouth of the Yukon. Her background ranges from renewable energy project management to traditional economic development across Alaska with a focus on rural communities. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from UAA: University of Alaska Anchorage and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at UAA.

In her free time, you can find Megan rock climbing, backpacking, traveling abroad or finding wild ice to skate in the winter.

If you see Megan at AFN this week or Alaska Rural Energy next week, be sure to say hi!

In August, ORPC helped to facilitate a visit of representatives from the village of Galena to our RivGen Power System in Igiugig, Alaska.

The meeting marked an exciting milestone for us as a company: witnessing one Alaskan community share their years of experience generating power from the Kvichak River with another seeking their own alternative energy sources along the Yukon.

Our staff were thrilled to meet representatives from Galena and learn about their energy journey and goals for the future.

More than ever, reliable energy generation is a top priority for the remote communities of Alaska. Tides and rivers have always sustained them. ORPC is dedicated to making sure they power them as well.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the U.S., we take the time to honor the importance of upholding Native American and Alaska Native culture and history.

In developing energy solutions in partnership with communities, we endeavor to learn from our Indigenous partners' traditional knowledge of the land and waters they have stewarded for time immemorial.

ORPC was thrilled to take part in Maine Blue Economy Week!

The conference culminated in a tour of Portland's working waterfront led by Heather Moretti, Waterfront Coordinator for the City of Portland, Maine, Friday, with a kick-off at ORPC's headquarters on Commercial Street.

One big takeaway last week was how the ocean is a connective thread, tying so many diverse industries and geographies together. We are proud to have strong roots in Maine's marine sector and to be part of the fabric of a truly global ocean economy. See you all next year!

Today, on Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on the truths of our shared history, carried by Indigenous peoples across the country, and to honour their strength, determination and resilience.

At ORPC, we recognize that reconciliation is not a one-day reflection, it's a long-term shared responsibility. We work to ensure that this understanding is woven daily into our practices, our decisions, and our culture. We engage meaningfully by listening to and learning from our Indigenous partners, ensuring their voices, priorities, and leadership are embedded at every stage of our projects.

ORPC is excited to take part in Maine Blue Economy Week next week in Portland, bringing together the people and ideas shaping Maine’s ocean economy.

Walk down any of Portland’s wharves and piers, and you’ll find examples of how Maine’s heritage industries are working side by side with new innovators in the sector. As a part of that ecosystem, ORPC is proud to be kicking off the walking tour of Portland’s working waterfront Friday, October 2nd.

You can also stop by our booth Wednesday and Thursday to learn more about how ORPC’s river and tidal energy systems, built and tested in Maine, are providing clean power to communities across North America and beyond.

We look forward to seeing many of you there!

ORPC operations staff have recently returned from a successful trip to Igiugig, Alaska.

Alongside longstanding community partners, our team was able to successfully complete routine maintenance without bringing the devices to shore. That marks the completion of seven years' operating in the Kvichak River.

So much goes into ensuring this type of fieldwork runs smoothly. Engineers back in ORPC's Brunswick, Maine, lab honed each step of the process through dry runs ahead of the trip. ORPC’s field crew then used that learning to bring the devices to the surface, complete the maintenance and return the devices to the river bottom. And on this trip, our seasoned Alaska crew provided on water training to staff from Canada and Ireland to prepare them for upcoming deployments.

ORPC's strong record of successful deployments and retrievals is down to the employees and partners out there performing this work, season after season. The two RivGen devices are now back on the riverbed and have begun their eighth year of operation.
