Technical Blog 6 - Coverage Studies for Electrical Fixtures on Mission Critical Roofs.

When installing lightning protection systems for mission-critical projects, there is daily interaction between electrical equipment and the fixtures installed at the roof level.

In this technical blog, Hadi Beik Daraei Baik Daraei, Senior Design Manager at LPI Group, outlines what a coverage study is, how you can protect your data centre roof and electrical equipment against lightning strikes, best practices and standards for protecting electrical equipment at roof level, and the exceptions for protection requirements of a mission-critical data centre.

Lightning protection parameters for high rise buildings.

LPI Group caught up with Senior Electrical Engineer Hadi Beik Daraei to discuss the lightning protection parameters for high-rise buildings.

The development of high-rise buildings continues to trend upward, in Ireland and Europe, with the average height of a high-rise building in Europe being 130 metres.

In an area with an average flash density greater than 1.5, for a building higher than 25 meters the risk of probable damage and loss of human life for a building that contained more than 100 people is considered high risk.

Read the full blog post to discover how you can protect your high-rise building from the potential threat of lightning strikes.

‘Investigate the market. It seems daunting at first’ – firms’ advice on exporting to Nordics.

There are currently over 50 Irish companies working on data centre projects across the Nordics, according to Enterprise Ireland, including Dublin-based LPI Group.

“Data centres are in our lives now. It is critical infrastructure, which sped up during Covid, that’s the realisation people have to get. I know there is a lot of populism, but they also create a lot of employment, not just in the data centre, but the eco-system that goes around it”, commented Paudi Reidy, CEO LPI Group.

Client exports to the Nordic region reached a record high of €1.24 billion last year, up 31 per cent on 2020. A lot of it is in the high tech construction sector.

Turnover at LPI Group will be around €16 million this year. It also has two sister companies, and between the three, turnover will be just under €40 million in 2022.

The company recently opened an office in Gävle, Sweden, and hopes to use increasing numbers of local staff in the markets it operates.

DCsforBees!

'Orchards in the Community' Initiative is back providing early food sources for our pollinator-friendly friends 🐝.

We are delighted to participate again with Host in Ireland and this fantastic initiative which will help improve our bee friends' health and improve pollination.

When we started this year, we set out to plant 2,000 mixed fruit orchards. Thanks to our friends, family, and volunteers in the digital infrastructure industry and all their hard work, we are nearly at 3000 pledges for the year.

Well done to all those who are involved and Host in Ireland for leading this important initiative.

Meeting the global need for scalability in the energy transition.

The Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is unreachable without an immediate scale-up of energy transition technologies, experts say.

"We should be investing at more than twice the speed and the scale that we are doing at the moment".
Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, Chief Executive Officer at EDP.

Last year saw 294GW of renewable energy capacity installed worldwide. Although this was a record, with EDP alone installing 2.6GW of wind and solar, it was only about 6 percent above the almost 277GW of capacity that came online in 2020, marking a slowdown in installation rates at a time when the buildout of renewable energy should be accelerating.

With this demand for increased installation rates, it is critical that your renewable energy is protected from the potential hazards of lightning strikes.

LPI offers full design, installation, commissioning, and testing of your renewables, ensuring your most valued assets are protected from avoidable downtimes that could result in serious financial losses.
