Ireland has no shortage of infrastructure ambition.
The challenge is delivery.

At last week’s IBEC Engineering the Future Business Leaders Convention, our Managing Director Ed Byrne joined Mary Considine, CEO of Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail, and Marguerite Sayers, Deputy Chief Executive at ESB, to discuss what it will take to deliver sustainable infrastructure in practice.

The conversation focused on some very real questions:

✅ How do we deliver low-carbon infrastructure without weakening competitiveness?
✅ How can businesses grow while reducing energy use and emissions?
✅ How can sustainable procurement become clearer and easier to act on?

One message was clear: sustainability goals need to be matched by engineering capacity, investment, innovation and better collaboration.

At Galco, we are working on that same challenge through our Carbon Transition Emission Plan, targeting a 37% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.

Recent and planned investments include:

👉Waterford: +65% capacity, 40% reduction in carbon intensity
👉Dublin: +30% capacity, 23% reduction in carbon intensity
👉Cork: new heat exchange, estimated 10-15% reduction in carbon intensity
👉Draperstown: planned 2027 upgrade, +60% bath capacity and anticipated 40% reduction in carbon intensity.

The goal is not just to set targets.
It is to turn them into practical delivery.

Two teams. Two finals. One Golden Glove.

A great performance from our Galco 5-a-side teams at Business Fives Dublin.

Both Galco teams delivered strong performances and reached their respective finals.

Galco Team 2 finished as runners-up in the Champions League Final after a closely contested 3–2 game.

Galco Team 1 also secured a runners-up finish in the Conference League Final.

A special mention to Harry from Galco Team 2, who won the Golden Glove award after an excellent performance in goal.

The event was a great opportunity for our colleagues to get active, enjoy some healthy competition and represent Galco together as a team.

Best of luck to Team 2 in the All-Ireland Finals in Belfast next week.

Turning waste heat into useful energy. ♻

Our Cork plant has installed a new heat exchanger that will recover surplus heat from the galvanizing furnace and reuse it to heat process chemical tanks.

The result? An expected 10-15% reduction in natural gas consumption at the plant.

It’s the third Galco site to introduce this type of heat recovery system, following successful installations in Dublin and Waterford, and forms part of our wider Carbon Emissions Transition Plan.

The project was supported by the Enterprise Ireland Decarbonisation Grant and contributes to our target of reducing Group carbon intensity by 37% by 2030.

There’s nothing like seeing the real thing. 👀

That was one of the clearest takeaways from our Galvanizing Industry Open Day 2026.

It was a busy day across all our galvanizing plants, with hundreds of engineers, architects, steel fabricators, contractors, local authority representatives and clients visiting our sites to see the hot dip galvanizing process up close.

🏎️ Some visitors were impressed by the speed of the process.

♻️ Others noticed how much is reused and recycled across the plant.

Many valued the practical design conversations around:

✅ venting

✅ drainage

✅ detailing

✅ coating quality

✅ lead times

At our Dublin plant, visitors also saw the value of having galvanizing, shot blasting and paint services under one roof - helping maintain quality across each stage of the process.

One message came through very clearly:

Better understanding of the galvanizing process does not only help create better steel structures.

It can also help speed up the whole process.

And that means saving time, reducing avoidable issues and protecting project budgets.
