Varming Consulting Engineers Varming design and monitor the installation, operation and monitoring of the mechanical, electrical

Varming Consulting Engineers are dedicated to ensuring the economic, environmental and social sustainability of our designs by meeting the most stringent standards such as BREEAM and Passive House along with embracing the move to NZEB. We achieve this through a creative an innovative approach to all aspects of Mechanical and Electrical design, specification and cost control and full collaboration

with all project stakeholders. Varming have a significant portfolio of Commercial Projects, each having different design requirements determined by the eventual building use. We have been involved in many Industrial Projects of varying scale and complexity, from Warehousing to production area to finisged pharma

In modern construction and building design, there are many sustainable technologies used. Within the sphere, a term commonly used is 'Operational Carbon'. What does it mean? That's the focus of this latest blog from Varming Consulting Engineers.

Not to be confused with 'embodied carbon' - a term that refers to the CO2 emissions generated during the production, transportation, and construction of building materials—operational carbon describes the CO2 emissions associated with the energy used to run a building throughout its lifecycle.

Embodied carbon is released upfront, whereas operational carbon is emitted slowly every time that heating and cooling systems, lighting and powered appliances are used. Both are critical when considering the overall environmental impact of any given building and any efforts employed to reduce its carbon footprint.

Operational carbon in construction also includes the emissions generated during repairs or maintenance activities. For example, when HVAC systems, roofing, and insulation need to be replaced, this further contributes to the overall figure. As such, durable, long-lasting materials and systems are preferred to mitigate this problem.

A building's orientation and location can also influence operational carbon, which is why proper site selection is vital to maximise natural ventilation and location. A passive design strategy can help lower energy consumption, particularly when optimised with an energy management system. At Varming Consulting Engineers, we've been at the forefront of M&E engineering in Ireland for over 75 years, and we're fully committed to realising a greener industry.

Typically speaking, low-voltage switchgear (LVS) is employed in industrial and critical power applications, with integrated switchboards (IS) being used in commercial settings. LVS, however, features circuit breakers that feed more severe duty loads than IS and provides power to motor control centres, switchboards or large motors found in a facility.

The benefits of LVS include:
LVS circuit breakers offer more metering & circuit protection than loads found on switchboards.
Through remote racking, remote monitoring & real-time alarms & diagnostics, it minimises arc flash hazards.
While maintaining operator safety is one of the key roles played by low-voltage switchgear, it also exists to perform a broader range of functions.
Control - Managing the operation of electrical circuits, allowing for the turning on and off of power in different parts of the system.

System Protection - Preventing overloads or short circuits, thereby preventing damage to the system and equipment contained within.
Isolation - Providing a means to safely disconnect parts of the electrical system, which is vital for maintenance and repair activities.
Monitoring and Diagnostics - Modern switchgear often includes features for monitoring system performance and diagnosing issues.

An example of the Varming M & E engineers team using low-voltage switchgear can be found in their recent involvement in the €29,000,000 Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit project for the Health Services Executive.

Varming Consulting Engineers were commissioned to design the mechanical and electrical services installations for 15 social housing dwelling units arranged in two blocks. The lower block has single storey units at the front of the site for use by families. The larger block is a two storey building with 12 apartments primarily intended for older residents. The services design for the associated site infrastructure included incoming ESB and Telecoms and site lighting.

Varming are recognised leaders in advanced energy & environmental modelling for sustainable design in addition to our expertise in Passive House Design, BREEAM, BER and DEC assessments.

When it comes to sustainable building design, heat loss is a big factor that must be considered, as it has a direct bearing on thermal efficiency. In this article, we take a closer look at an M&E engineering term known as U-Values and how it's used to express how buildings lose heat.

Essentially, U-values measure how well building materials conduct heat. Another term relating to this concept is thermal transference, which describes how heat moves through a structure, whether it's made from a single material or a composite. A material's U-value is calculated by measuring the rate of heat transfer through it per unit area per degree temperature difference.
