Today, over 100 breeding experts, researchers, industry representatives and international organisations have gathered at Teagasc Moorepark for the Future Dairy Breeding Summit, hosted by VistaMilk Research Ireland Centre.

The event provides an opportunity to explore how advances in genetics, reproductive technologies, data and sustainability are shaping the future of dairy breeding, while opening an important conversation about how breeding programmes can continue to deliver economic, environmental and societal benefits in the years ahead.

Our next VistaMilk impact case study highlights how advanced statistical modelling is improving our ability to predict milk processing performance.

This work focuses on the development of a Bayesian probabilistic least squares regression (bplsr) approach to predict milk heat stability — a key factor in determining how milk performs during processing and its suitability for different products.

By reducing prediction error and better capturing the complexity of milk composition data, this model provides a more reliable tool for industry decision-making, supporting improved product consistency and processing efficiency.

A key strength of this work is its accessibility. The model has been developed as an open-source tool, enabling uptake beyond the research environment and supporting wider application across the dairy sector.

It is a strong example of how combining data science with dairy research can deliver practical, industry-relevant outcomes.

Bringing together almost 100 researchers from 13 institutions, the VistaMilk Annual Conference is a strong reminder of what this centre represents in practice.

From soil, grassland, animal and food research to imaging, sensor and data science, today is about connecting expertise across disciplines that do not always sit in the same room.

Importantly, this also includes the social science perspective — from consumer analysis to generational renewal — ensuring that the research is grounded not only in technology and biology, but in people, behaviour and future farming systems.

Across discussions during the day the focus is clear: building a shared understanding and strengthening how this work fits together as one system.

Days like this matter. They create the space to connect, challenge thinking and shape a more joined-up approach to research that can deliver real impact.
