An important week for the future of the mackerel stock with the ICES - International Council for the Exploration of the Sea assessment benchmark workshop taking place. The mackerel tagging data, a key input in the mackerel stock assessment, has been improved in recent years with the introduction of tag scanners into four of the Killybegs fish processors through a Marine Institute - Foras na Mara, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Ireland's Seafood Development Agency and KFO project.

Between Killybegs Seafoods, Arctic Fish Processing, Sean Ward Fish Exports Ltd and Premier Fish the Irish processors have registered 439 recaptures since 2023. The scanners will continue to yield valuable data for many years, highlighting the direct contribution the industry is making to fisheries science.
