Titanium nitride, formed inside the HIP cycle. That is the short version of what Dr. Shane Keaveney will present at OMTEC 2026.

The longer version. Croom Medical, Quintus Technologies and Uppsala University tested multiple HIP atmospheres on L-PBF Ti6Al4V. Nitrogen-enhanced cycles produced TiN surface layers with roughly double the hardness of base titanium and minimal measurable wear in pin-on-disc testing. No delamination. No separate coating operation.

The session covers nitrogen concentrations, thermal profiles, post-processing considerations, and what it means for AM titanium in articulating surfaces traditionally dominated by CoCrMo.
