BMS worked with Donlon Civil and Building Services to design, install and certify a bespoke/customised 70 m3 capacity surface water infiltration system using BMS Drainmax Tunnels at a housing estate in Co. Sligo, Ireland.
After a site visit by BMS is became clear that there were a number of challenges to be overcome. It was an existing compact site, in close proximity to trees/houses, with a pre-existing inlet/outlet and very small falls across the site. There were also hydrant points in the middle of the available installation area. BMS innovated a solution where the infiltration tank was split in two, either side of the hydrants, with a Petrol/Oil Interceptor installed in the middle.

⭐ How do you expand a tourism development when the local municipal wastewater treatment plant has no spare capacity?
💡 A large camping and tourist accommodation site in Brittany, France faced exactly this challenge. Working with Symbiose Technologies, Butler Manufacturing Services (BMS) delivered a temporary, modular wastewater treatment solution that enabled the site's expansion to proceed in two phases without increasing the load on the already overloaded municipal network.
Using the BMS Blivet® all-in-one package sewage treatment system, the project provided:

During the construction of Centre Parcs Longford Forest, all sewage from the site was treated on-site by BMS Blivet Package Sewage Treatment Systems and then reused.

It was reused for Toilet Flushing, Wheel washing, Dust suppression and Road Cleaning.

The payback on these Blivet systems wwas under 12 months.

Here's why water reuse on construction sites works so well: 80 to 90% of water used on a typical construction site goes to flushing toilets. If you treat sewage with UV disinfection and reuse it for non-potable purposes, you eliminate most of your demand for potable water.

The BMS Blivet can uniquely integrate high quality UV disinfection at the end of the treatment process, so the highly treated effluent is safe to reuse.

The Blivet systems that did this at Centre Parcs have now been used on 10+ other construction sites in Ireland and the UK such as multiple electricity grid projects, Dublin Airport, the N4 Sligo, and Avondale House, Co. Wicklow.

That's what a properly designed Package Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) looks like over its lifetime — not a fixed asset, a redeployable one.

❓A quick one for engineers specifying sewage treatment plants for a watercourse discharge.

Ammonia removal doesn't just add a process step. It adds plant capacity.

🔍Here's why.

The bacteria that nitrify ammonia are more fragile and temperature-sensitive than the organisms that remove BOD. In a temperate climate like Ireland, removing 1 gram of ammonia requires four times the oxidative capacity needed to remove 1 gram of BOD.

So, if your plant is already sized at 55 PE for BOD removal and you now need to bring ammonia from 40 mg/l down to 5 mg/l, you're adding 26 PE of oxidative capacity on top before you even consider total nitrogen or phosphorus.

By the time you add denitrification (anoxic balance tank, 50% recirculation) and a 15% buffer for ferric sulphate dosing for phosphorus (to take into account is biocidal and sludge bulking effects), a 55 PE BOD calculation can become a (5 PE plant.

Blivet to Premier Tech Bordeaux
⭐ Last week saw the collection of a BMS BL3500 Blivet Package Sewage Treatment System by a major French customer for installation in a conference/hotel complex in the Bordeaux region of France.

✨38 Years old and still going strong; Ceide Fields Visitor Centre Sewage Treatment Plant.

We have a sewage treatment plant that has been operating for 38 years.

It's on the west coast of Ireland, at Céide Fields, the oldest stone walled fields ever discovered, dating back 6,000 years ever discovered. The West Coast of Ireland bears the brunt of Atlantic storms especially in Winter, meaning that only a robust sewage treatment system will survive there.

💡Our BMS Aerotor next generation RBC Sewage Treatment Plant still works well. We still maintain and supply spare parts for it.

When we talk about designing sewage treatment plants to last 30+ years, that's not a marketing line. It's the actual design standard we work to.

❓ "How are you going to maintain this SUDS system in 20 years?"
It's the question planning authorities ask about every attenuation and infiltration surface water management system and it's a fair one.

Most systems don't have a good answer. However, BMS do:
💡 For crate systems:
Run a perforated pipe through the stone bed beneath the crates. The self-cleaning velocity of water moving through the pipe carries solids to the outlet manhole—no access to the system required. The pipe can be jet-washed if needed. Effectively maintenance-free.
💡 For tunnel systems:
Install an isolator row, a single central tunnel enclosed in permeable geotextile with an impermeable base liner. Direct all inflow into that row. Solids concentrate there. Everything else stays clean. Maintenance is at the inlet or outlet manhole.

🚀 Combine either with a Petrol/Oil Interceptor/Separator or a vortex separator like the Stormbreaker Defender downstream and the volume of solids reaching the system drops dramatically. These can both be fitted with an alarm that activate a beacon or text designated numbers once a designated level of silt/oil is reached. Even where there is power not available, we have solar power solutions available!

Planning authorities in Ireland have accepted both solutions on multiple projects. We've been refining these approaches for 40 years.

We have just published our latest case study on how our Drainmax Infiltration/Attenuation Tunnels provided a great value and smart design to a new sports club in Dublin.
BMS worked with GMCS Construction to design, install and certify a value-engineered 575 m³ capacity surface water infiltration system using BMS Drainmax Tunnels for a new sports facility in Clonsilla, Dublin 15. The system was delivered across two tanks and designed to provide maximum value while addressing challenging ground conditions, including a hard rock layer encountered just below subsoil level. BMS collaborated closely with the client to develop a design that minimised upfront costs while maintaining performance and compliance. Despite difficult excavation conditions, the system was installed efficiently to meet programme demands.
