The 'Kepler' CanSat

The 'Kepler' CanSat Hey everyone, welcome to The 'Edwina' CanSat Team page. We are one of the teams in the CanSat 2016/17 competition from Summerhill.

We are a group of students from Summerhill College, Sligo, undertaking a project called CanSat. In shorthand, the main aim of the project is to fit all of the primary components of a Satellite into the space of a European Soda Can (115mm x 65mm). If you would like to learn more about the project, click on the Project Details tab at the bottom of the page.

Hello everyone from the Kepler CanSat Team.

It is with great regret that I must inform you, that Summerhill's Kepler CanSat lost whilst competing in the Irish Nationals last weekend. We tried our best and worked very hard over the duration of the project, especially at the final hurdle.

Due to unforeseen problems that arose the night before the competition with our computer wiping itself, crashing and also burning out a PCB. We came under a lot of pressure as we had to redo our code and presentation.

For two days over the competition whilst other teams were getting a good nights rest we were up working around the clock for 41 hours.

In the end, we applied ourself's cooperating as a team and didn't do shabby of a job of it with a semi-functional CanSat and a decent rework of our old presentation.

But unfortunately it wasn't the original standard that we had set out for, and we realized this, especially with some of our secondary missions not being able to deploy due to the lack of time to fix them.

And so, as all things come to an end we'd like to say that we enjoyed our second year of the CanSat competition and together we have gained a lot of experience throughout our journey. Learning vital skills in communication, teamwork, and technology. Life is all about the experience.

Next year we won't be able to compete as our Team will have their Leaving Cert to worry about. But from all of us at the Kepler CanSat, a final farewell to all of our friends and followers. 🚀👋

And a special thanks to all who helped from IT Sligo and our teachers from Summerhill College who coordinated emails and droves us back and forth.

Note: As head of PR I will be making some finishing posts, with a video of the rocket and some pictures when they are received at a later date.

Heres is a fun little animation created by our team videographer and animator Robert Gaynor, demonstrateing the National CanSat Rockrt launch which took place yesterday in Emo Court, Portlaoise.

The animation goes through the stages of the launch, with the CanSat being deployed from the rocket gathering data on its decent to Earth.

Stay Tuned for more information on the winning anncouncement of the Nationals.

The Big Night before the National CanSat Competition. Team Kepler is buckling down and preparing our satellite before the rocket launch tomorrow. Finalizing code, circuitry, satellite's casing and our critical design report for the judges.

Update: Currently it is 2:00AM with a 7:00PM wake up call and we're still working around the clock, as we have had some major hiccups along the way. The SSD in Conors laptop which stored all our Code for the satellites missions has been lost. We've also burnt out a PCB.

We have to rewrite this code tonight and our presentation has also been lost. This must also be redone and structured again. Valuable software was also lost, but Team Kepler will march on through the night and bring back first place for the North West and Summerhill College.

Tomorrow we will be recording a travel video / uploading the stream of the CanSat launch to Facebook and our website at:
https://www.keplercansat.tech

We'll also have a small animation created by our animator and video producer - Robert Gaynor.

More information to come over the next couple of days. Stay Tuned.

Last Friday afternoon Team Kepler went down to visit Primary Scoil Asicus in Co.Sligo Strandhill. As part of our public outreach, we decided to visit a local primary school where we could show all the young aspiring scientists there the wonders of technology through CanSat.

Rory and Conor gave a presentation to the 4th class pupils about what is CanSat all about, our team roles and our missions such as Live Streaming in 1080p from the Kepler satellite for example. Using slides and Keplers website we gave a demo of our satellites live streaming capabilities which we also integrated into the Kepler website here for viewing: http://keplercansat.tech/

The children asked Rory and Conor many questions about coding, circuit boards, and technology in general as a lot of these questions revolved around the construction of the Kepler CanSat.

Ben and Robert talked about their roles and responsibilities to the class with regards to social media, artwork, and photography. And how they all play a part in promoting the team and CanSat around Ireland.

Overall, many questions and answers touched on important issues such as teamwork and work ethic.

It was a privilege to have had an opportunity to teach the younger generation the benefit of science, CanSat and STEM Careers.

Greetings Earthlings, Conor our team leader and coder has been working relentlessly to deliver a streamlined, easy-to-use service that you can access to explore what Kepler is doing at the moment. We're calling it CanOS, and it's composed of a blog, video streaming platform, and a statistical analysis website called ExplorerUI.

A website explaining the concept has recently been published for you to view, with more following shortly.
