What a fantastic Maths Week! 🧮✨ We’ve had a brilliant time celebrating all things maths, solving puzzles, exploring patterns, and seeing the fun that maths can bring. This is just a small snapshot of everything that went on in Ireland this last week 📸

Each year on 16th October, people gather to retrace Sir William Rowan Hamilton’s footsteps on the journey that led to him discovering the equation for Quaternions, a strange new number system.

This piece of graffiti changed mathematics forever.

Led by Maynooth University and Dunsink Observatory, folks walked along the canal to Broom Bridge to witness the annual tradition for Hamilton Day. Maths Week occurs on Hamilton Day every year to commemorate this Irish Mathematical heritage.

Yesterday, students from Belfast schools All Saints College and De La Salle College enjoyed a PwC hosted Maths Week Ireland session with high profile mathematician, YouTube and television presenter Dr Tom Crawford, aka Tom Rocks Maths 🤘🎲

Introduced by Maths Week’s co-founder Dr Sheila Donegan and PwC Director Peter Cardwell, Tom entertained and enthralled over sixty Year 11 and 12 students and their teachers presenting maths concepts from movies and video games including Star Wars, Pokémon, Mario & Sonic.

Today we celebrate our rich mathematical heritage with Broomsday 🎉 On 16 October, 1843, William Rowan Hamilton had a mathematical epiphany about a strange new number system called Quaternions at Broom Bridge in Dublin. Quaternions now play a fundamental role in computer games and animation, special effects in movies, space navigation, and much more.

Pick up a copy of today’s Irish Times to get your Broomsday poster, featuring some stories of Ireland’s mathematical heritage and Maths puzzles!

Delighted to meet James Lawless TD and show him Puzzles in the Park in Merrion Square, one of the many initiatives we are running for Maths Week. It’s always great to speak with the Minister, who as a mathematics graduate himself recognises the value of maths and the importance of taking it out of the classroom and placing it in everyday life.

From puzzles in the park to workshops, interactive events and activities in schools and colleges, Maths Week aims to show people of all ages that maths is everywhere and can be fun, engaging and accessible to everyone.

We’re delighted to have Minister Lawless's support as we celebrate the 21st year of Maths Week Ireland.

🍰 Step into the Maths Munch Cafe! You and your friends have a certain amount of ‘Kuro’ to spend. Suddenly, you find you’re using Maths in the real world!

Created for 3rd and 4th class students (but welcome to all to play!), the Maths Cafe interactive digital learning game brings maths to life with real-world scenarios in a fun and engaging way. Use your skills in arithmetic to solve your way through 5 levels of increasing difficulty.

This activity is available in both Irish and English, and features a Challenge mode for those that want to keep going!

Developed in partnership with and based on the 2026 Senior Primary Maths Week Poster.

Celebrating Women in STEM during Ada Lovelace Day at SETU in Carlow!

1st year female students were invited to take part in a special event for Ada Lovelace day at SETU in Carlow. Students got to experience a range of STEM activities, including Maths Presenter Nelo Maestre from , solving Maths puzzles to break into a box, Robot Zone in the SETU Robotics lab, µZoo Science, and Saving a Hospital from a Cyber Attack!

It was a great event to honour women in STEM on Ada Lovelace Day, known as the world’s first computer programmer!
