7 Ways to Destroy Your Asbestos Safety Career in Ireland
(And How to Fix the Damage)
In Ireland, asbestos safety is tightly regulated for good reason — the risks are real and long-term. Whether you’re working under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2006 & 2010 or liaising with the HSA, here’s how to avoid career-ending mistakes and protect lives.
1. Ignoring the Asbestos Management Plan
❌ Failing to follow the site-specific asbestos plan or skipping the risk assessment can expose workers to harmful fibres.
✅ Always implement and follow the asbestos management plan (AMP) under HSA guidelines.
✅ Wear correct RPE and PPE and make sure controls like enclosure or suppression are properly used.
2. Poor Communication on Site
❌ Not informing workers or subcontractors of asbestos risks is a breach of duty and trust.
✅ Hold clear pre-start briefings and toolbox talks.
✅ Use clear signage (“Danger: Asbestos”) and make sure everyone understands the work method.
3. Skipping Mandatory Training
❌ Workers without asbestos awareness or task-specific training shouldn’t be anywhere near ACMs.
✅ Ensure appropriate SOLAS or approved training is completed — awareness, non-licensed work, or full licensed contractor training as required.
✅ Refresh training annually, and stay compliant with the HSA’s Code of Practice.
4. Becoming Complacent
❌ Thinking “sure, it’ll be grand” is a dangerous attitude when dealing with a known carcinogen.
✅ Keep up-to-date with air monitoring, clearance testing, and re-inspections.
✅ Always reassess risks when job scopes change — no shortcuts.
5. Not Documenting Your Work
❌ No records? That’s non-compliance — and it will come back to haunt you.
✅ Maintain detailed records of site assessments, exposure logs, monitoring results, and disposal manifests.
✅ Have your asbestos removal notification ready if required under Irish law.
6. Ignoring Industry Updates
❌ Sticking to the “old way” while the industry evolves leaves you vulnerable.
✅ Monitor HSA publications, European directives, and CPD training.
✅ Be open to using newer, safer removal techniques or monitoring technology.
7. Dismissing Worker or Client Concerns
❌ Not taking complaints seriously will destroy trust and damage your reputation.
✅ Listen to operatives, clients, and occupants — especially in schools, hospitals, or housing.
✅ Be responsive, transparent, and act swiftly on feedback.
In Ireland, cutting corners with asbestos is not just career su***de — it’s a public health risk.
Do it right. Stay compliant. Protect your crew.
