🧠 Myelin may be doing something in the brain we’ve been overlooking: saving energy.
A new study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev challenges the traditional view of myelin as primarily a way to speed up electrical signals.
Led by Prof. Ilya Fleidervish, together with doctoral researcher Oron Kotler, the research found that in cortical gray matter, myelin barely changed signal speed — but reduced sodium entry during electrical spikes by 50%, effectively halving the metabolic cost of signal propagation.
Published in PNAS, the findings offer a new perspective on brain energy management and could deepen our understanding of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases.
