🧠 Myelin may be doing something in the brain we’ve been overlooking: saving energy.

A new study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev challenges the traditional view of myelin as primarily a way to speed up electrical signals.

Led by Prof. Ilya Fleidervish, together with doctoral researcher Oron Kotler, the research found that in cortical gray matter, myelin barely changed signal speed — but reduced sodium entry during electrical spikes by 50%, effectively halving the metabolic cost of signal propagation.

Published in PNAS, the findings offer a new perspective on brain energy management and could deepen our understanding of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases.

🌊 A new approach to cleaning up oil spills — combining rapid absorption with biological degradation.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, led by Prof. Ariel Kushmaro and Dr. Danit Lisa Karsagi Biron, developed a cellulose-based aerogel that can absorb approximately 100 times its own weight in oil.

Recently published in Chemical Engineering Journal Advances, the technology also provides essential nutrients that support oil-degrading bacteria — helping combine immediate removal with longer-term biodegradation.

“This technology connects scientific excellence with an urgent environmental need, with the potential for meaningful impact at scale,” says Dr. Galit Mazuz-Perlmuter, VP Business Development at BGN Technologies.

The technology is currently undergoing patent recognition through BGN, with potential applications across the energy, maritime and environmental remediation industries.

🎒 As pupils return to classrooms for a new school year, it’s worth remembering: every researcher started in one.

So how can innovation make complex ideas more intuitive, engaging and tangible?

🥽 Dr. Osama Swidan of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, together with Sara Bagossi, Prof. Florian Schacht and Prof. Cristina Sabena, explored how augmented reality can support the learning of calculus.

Using an AR application called Touch the Derivative, pupils trace the graph of a function by moving their hands in space, while the corresponding derivative graph appears in real time.

This creates a direct connection between movement, the shape of a function and the mathematical meaning of its derivative. An abstract concept usually encountered through formulas and graphs becomes an interactive experience.

📐 The work illustrates how physical interaction and real-time visual feedback can offer new ways to understand challenging mathematical concepts.

BGN and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN) mourn the untimely passing of Tal Ben Haim, Director-General and Vice-President of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who also served on the boards of BGN and the NIBN.

Josh Peleg, CEO of BGN and the NIBN, shares:

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Tal Ben-Haim.

Since becoming Director-General in 2022, Tal played a central role in shaping the University’s strategy and future. As a member of the boards of BGN and the NIBN he worked together with both organizations, bringing invaluable insights, a broad perspective and a clear sense of understanding of the importance of applied research and IP commercialization for the University.

Tal was intelligent, original, and deeply curious, with the ability to transform ambitious ideas into meaningful action. Even as he faced a serious illness, he remained determined and continued to look ahead.

His wisdom, voice, and presence will be deeply missed.

May his memory be a blessing.”

“Ecosystems are built, not declared.”

As the ’s technological units relocate to the Negev, Prof. Dan G. Blumberg, Vice President for Regional and Industrial Development at אוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב and a member of BGN’s Board of Directors, sees a unique opportunity to build a powerful dual-use innovation ecosystem.

His key argument: technologies increasingly move between defense and civilian applications — but realizing their full potential requires deliberate connections between academia, the IDF, industry and entrepreneurs.

The Negev now has an opportunity to create those pathways, turning research and real-world challenges into technologies with impact across multiple markets.

Where academia, industry and a city come together

Today, we welcomed German students from the New Kibbutz program by the AHK Israel / German-Israeli Chamber of Industry & Commerce to explore the ecosystem connecting Ben-Gurion University of the Negev research, industry and innovation in Beer-Sheva.

From BGU and the Beer-Sheva Innovation District, through advanced research infrastructure at the Ilse Katz Institute (IKI), to the industry-facing environment at Synergy7 - the visit offered a glimpse into how research, infrastructure, industry and the city come together as one innovation ecosystem.

We wrapped up at BGN, sharing our role in connecting BGU research with industry and real-world opportunities.

🦐 Protecting thousands of shrimp from a devastating virus starts with just one mother!

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) can wipe out entire shrimp farms within days.

A molecular platform developed by Prof. Issam Khalila at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev takes a different approach: treating female broodstock to deliver antiviral RNA directly to developing eggs.

Applied at hatcheries, the platform allows protection to pass to thousands of offspring before hatching - without treating individual shrimp or genetically modifying them.

🪟 What if a smart window only needed power when it changes?

A patented technology from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, led by Prof. Ibrahim Abdulhalim and PhD student Niveen Hussein, enables windows to switch between transparent and opaque states with a short electrical pulse – without continuous power.

With applications across buildings, vehicles and workspaces, it could support smarter light and heat management while reducing energy use.
