Have you ever been curious about what hematopoietic stem cell transplant is used to treat? Stem cell transplants might be the only potential cure for patients with certain types of blood cancers. Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are examples of diseases that may be treated with a transplant; however, not all patients with these diseases will need or be eligible for a transplant.

For patients with blood cancer, their individual treatment journey may ultimately lead to allogeneic stem cell transplant. Once allogeneic stem cell transplant is considered as an option for a patient, there are still many decisions to be made at this point in the process.

One important decision is selecting a donor source for transplant. A fully matched stem cell donor, which may be found via a related or an unrelated donor in the registry, involves matching of the cell’s human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), and is usually considered the most attractive option for patients. But what do you do if you don’t have a full match available?

This is where options involving HLA matching from partially matched donor sources, cord blood transplant and innovative cell therapies can offer a strong alternative.

Newer cell therapy technologies allow potentially greater access to stem cell transplant for patients who otherwise may not have been able to access transplant, including patients from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds where finding an exact matched donor may be more difficult.

Ongoing innovation continues to create new paths to help ensure stem cell transplant offers more patients the opportunity to recover, with fewer risks, and to live their lives to the fullest.

Today is World Cord Blood Day, a day to raise awareness of umbilical cord blood, a potent source of stem cells for transplant, a starting material for valuable cell therapies, and a potential cure for certain blood cancers.

Saving cord blood and researching therapies derived from its stem cells has the potential to offer a second chance at life.

Today, Gamida Cell recognizes Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) World Awareness Day. MDS is a rare group of bone marrow failure disorders where the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells.

It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of MDS. A blood test with full blood count analysis can lead to a diagnosis – and early detection is linked to better outcomes.

Today, we announced that the first patient has received Omisirge™ (omidubicel-onlv). With 15 transplant centers now onboarded across the U.S., transplanters are also identifying a growing number of patients for whom they intend to use Omisirge as their donor source.
