Read on Green Queen Media: China's new alternative protein center:

The center will focus on research and development of cultivated meat and microbial protein. It is part of a larger effort by China to become a leader in the future food industry.

China is the world's largest meat consumer, but it is also looking to increase the share of alternative protein in its diet.

The facility currently has a 200-litre cell line for cultivated meat, and a 2,000-litre production line for microbial protein, but plans to develop two 2,000-litre cell culture lines, and three microbial protein pilot lines of 2,000 and 5,000 litres.

The country is already seeing success in this area, with many companies developing cultivated meat products. The Chinese government is also supporting the development of the cultivated meat industry. Experts believe that, due to the sheer size of the country, that China's focus on alternative protein could have a major impact on the global food system.

The culture war around lab-grown meat continues to evolve, reflecting broader societal debates about technology, tradition, environmental sustainability, and the role of government in regulating food production.

In May 2024, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned lab-grown meat, framing it as a fight against the "global elite's plan" and positioning himself as a defender of traditional agriculture. This move was followed by similar efforts in Alabama, Arizona, and Tennessee, highlighting the issue's growing political significance, and now the state of Nebraska may follow suit as well.

The ban represents a clash between traditional agriculture and emerging food technologies. Supporters of the ban, like Florida's commissioner of agriculture, view it as protecting established industries. However, companies in the lab grown meat space argue that such bans limit consumer choice and individual liberty.

There are environmental and economic concerns as well, reminding us of the challenges that are yet to be resolved prior to cultivated meat becoming a regular part of people's diets.

MeatAfora מיטאפורה will continue on its journey to create a sustainable solution that is both scalable and tasty for traditional meat.

The rise of presents a significant opportunity for a more sustainable food system, but it also raises important social questions.

A new study from Tufts University explores the potential social and economic impacts of this emerging technology, focusing on individuals working within the traditional livestock industry.

By understanding the human dimension of this technological shift, we can ensure a just and equitable transition towards a more sustainable food future.

This is true not only for those who works for the traditional meat industry, but also to everyone that may be affected by this transition. Supply chain workers, raw materials producers, and many other elements constituting the backbone of the traditional food system.

Read more below about these gradual yet crucial changes and the concerns they raise.

A few words about the shelf-life of products.

Lab grown meat allows for a longer shelf life because of a few key factors:

- Longer storage duration compared to traditional meat

- Reduced cooling requirements

- Lower contamination risks

- Enhanced supply chain efficiency as a result

These advantages matter because they have a positive impact on the supply chain from a managerial aspect, as well as environmental benefits associated with lab grown meat and the decreasing of food waste, whilst increasing food security for people all over the world.

Today we take a look at the regulatory challenges that are facing the industry in Europe.

According to this piece on Science|Business, the current approval process for novel foods in the EU is too slow and cumbersome.

This is discouraging companies from developing and marketing new food products, such as cultivated meat. Also, the lack of clarity in regulations is leading to uncertainty and risk for businesses. As a result, some companies are considering relocating to other countries with more favorable regulatory environments.

In order to overcome these challenges, more public investment in research and development and infrastructure is needed. We have already begun observing such investments, such as the recent €25 million investment by Horizon Europe, however this is merely just the beginning.

Such investments would also help to ensure that Europe remains at the forefront of this rapidly growing sector, and bring clarity to the currently cumbersome and inefficient regulatory processes.

Read on FoodNavigator: can companies make the shift between producing consumer-end products to ingredients for the food industry?

In an interesting twist, the article explores the potential that may lie within such a business venture - B2B partnerships with other companies in the space may very well help cultivated meat producers be poised to gain much in case they begin producing not the end products for sale in supermarkets and restaurants, rather producing ingredients for other companies in the space, by integrating cultivated meat into existing supply chains.

Can this move help alleviate some of the obstacles that face the industry?

How long does it take to produce a batch of ?

Lab-grown meat can be produced significantly faster than traditional farming methods. The production of lab-grown meat typically takes between 2 to 8 weeks, depending on the type of meat being cultivated. In contrast, traditional farming methods require much longer timeframes.

For example, cattle can take up to several years to reach prime slaughter age before being ready to be sold commercially.

Coupled with the environmental benefits, can significantly change the way humanity views food sources and their consumption.
