The average length of the small intestine is about six meters, its area is 30 square meters - roughly the area of a classroom - and it is covered with millions of villi. In this complex configuration, there was no roadmap that listed the major landmarks and points of interest - until now.
In a new study, reported today in Nature, researchers in Prof. Shalev Itzkovitz’s lab at Weizmann and experts from Sheba Medical Center’s General Surgery Department compiled the first comprehensive gene expression atlas of the human small intestine. It uncovers the secrets of nutrient absorption and defense against infection.
“Our atlas provides answers to some basic research questions, but it can also be applied to clinical questions,” Prof. Itzkovitz says. “This study, like others that we are currently conducting with the General Surgery Department at Sheba, is only possible because senior members of that department appreciate the importance of basic research. במחקר חדש, המתפרסם היום בכתב-העת המדעי Nature, מציגים חוקרים ממעבדתו של פרופ' שלו איצקוביץ במכון ויצמן ומומחי המערך הכירורגי במרכז הרפואי שיבא אטלס גנטי מקיף וראשון מסוגו של המעי הדק האנושי, וחושפים את סודות ספיגת המזון וההגנה מזיהומים.
