How to translate breakthrough scientific discovery to an application for the benefit of humanity?
In an article published in Nature Biotechnology, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science highlight the inherent gap between basic discovery and real-world application. Despite the success of technology transfer offices, most discoveries never reach development stages, partly due to structural barriers and limited early-stage support.
The article, by Dr. Sharon Fireman, Prof. Tony Futerman, and Prof. Irit Sagi, describes “Bina,” a translational research and innovation unit established in 2021 to address this gap. Operating within the academic environment, Bina provides scientific guidance, industry connections, milestone-based funding, and training programs, enabling researchers to explore applications alongside basic research.
“Over its 5 years of activity, more than 115 Weizmann scientists have approached Bina. We supported 80 projects, of which 20 reached proof of concept and advanced to commercialization, and 11 have already been commercialized, leading to new companies - reflecting growing openness to applied research,” says Dr. Fireman, head of the Bina unit >> Link in comments
