What do Fortune Cookies and Mochi have in common? (Spoiler: Neither are actually Chinese)
Today at Trigo, we took a quick break for a Snack & Learn with Chufeng Wu, our Data Scientist, to dive into Chinese culture and New Year traditions.
Besides hearing about Chufeng’s upbringing and the Chinese calendar, we walked away with two surprising facts:
1. Fortune Cookies are actually an American-Chinese invention from San Francisco, created to market Chinese food to the West. 😯
2. Mochi is 100% Japanese! But we all agreed that no celebration is complete without something sweet, so we let it slide. 😝
Since it’s the 7th day of the New Year, it was the perfect timing to celebrate our team’s diversity and learn something new together.
It turns out there are so many similar traditions between Jewish and Chinese culture! from the lunar calendar and the symbolism of food to the protective signs we put on our doors. 🧧✨
Thank you Chufeng for this amazing session!
