World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14, honors the selfless act of voluntary blood donation and raises awareness about the critical need for safe and adequate blood supplies in healthcare. This day serves to thank donors for their life-saving contributions and encourages more people to donate regularly. Blood is essential for surgeries, accidents, cancer treatments, and many medical emergencies. Regular donations ensure hospitals and blood banks are prepared to save lives at any moment.
In India, the need for blood is enormous. According to estimates, the country requires around 13 to 14 million units of blood every year. However, there is often a shortfall of 1 to 2 million units, leading to critical shortages, especially in rural areas. By spreading awareness and encouraging voluntary blood donation, we can bridge this gap and ensure that no life is lost due to lack of blood.
