In pump engineering, two numbers matter most: Flow (Q) and Head (H).

Yet, many failures in pumping systems trace back to wrong assumptions in these calculations.
Let’s break it down simply.

🔹 Step 1: Flow (Q)
Your required flow rate comes from the process demand.
For utilities → based on consumption (cooling tower, boiler feed, etc.)
For process → mass balance or tank turnover
Always consider peak demand + future expansion margin.

🔹 Step 2: Head (H)
Head is the energy your pump must impart to the fluid.
It is NOT just pipe height!
Static Head = elevation difference between source & destination
Frictional Head = pipe length, diameter, bends, valves → use Darcy–Weisbach or Hazen–Williams equations
Pressure Head = pressure difference between suction & discharge tanks
Velocity Head = minor but included for accuracy
Total Head (H) = Static Head + Friction Loss + Pressure Difference + Velocity Head

🔹 Step 3: NPSH Check
NPSHa > NPSHr + Safety Margin
Ensures pump won’t cavitate
Account for suction lift, v***r pressure, temperature, and losses in suction piping

🔹 Step 4: System Curve vs Pump Curve
Plot system resistance curve and pump curve
The intersection = duty point (where your pump will actually run)
Check that this point is near the pump’s Best Efficiency Point (BEP)

✅ Checkpoints Before Finalizing
Correct fluid properties (SG, viscosity, temp, v***r pressure)
Consider operating range (min & max flow)
Add safety margins (but don’t oversize excessively!)
Ensure NPSH availability with site conditions
Validate with actual piping layout

⚠️ Precautions
Don’t assume catalogue flow/head without system analysis
Avoid long suction lines, undersized strainers, or sharp elbows near pump
Oversizing = energy loss + frequent failures
Undersizing = cavitation + inadequate process flow
