From geopolitical disruptions to the global transition toward green shipping, the maritime industry is undergoing a structural shift — and India is steadily emerging as a credible global alternative. 🇮🇳⚓

In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol, our Director, Vivek Merchant, shares how evolving geopolitical dynamics, fragmented supply chains, and the global search for diversified shipbuilding ecosystems are creating a historic opportunity for India’s maritime sector.

As demand rises for next-generation vessels and reliable ship repair capabilities, India is gaining recognition for engineering capabilities, policy support, and growing industrial ecosystem.

With projects spanning chemical tankers, ammonia dual-fuel vessels, defence collaborations, and an expanding repair portfolio, SDHI is building for the next era of global shipbuilding.

Building a force to power the future of shipbuilding 🚢

We recently conducted a focused training programme designed to give ITI students a hands-on exposure on shipbuilding and its evolving industry requirements.

In collaboration with Indian Maritime University, under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the industry initiative focused on upskilling local youth and strengthening the maritime talent pipeline.

With participation from 300 students and the presence of IMU faculty, the programme created a valuable exchange between industry and academia thereby bringing real-world context to classroom learning.

believes that academia-industry collaboration is a vital lever in shaping a more skilled, confident, and future-ready maritime workforce. We remain committed to build synergies that will collectively achieve India’s maritime ambitions.

6 Million Safe Man-Hours. Zero Lost Time Incidents - till date.

This is more than a number. It is the outcome of a culture where safety is embedded into every decision, every process across our operations.

This achievement reflects a sustained focus on building a workplace where safety is not just a protocol, but a shared responsibility embedded across every operational level.

On the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the commitment remains clear, ensuring that everyone returns home safe, every single day.

Ambition to Action: Leading India's Maritime Transformation

From a period of stagnation to becoming a recognised driver of national economic growth, India’s shipbuilding industry is navigating a monumental shift. 🚢

In a recent interview with SeaNews, our CEO Rear Admiral VK Saxena, IN (Retd) talks about the industry’s trajectory between 2020 and 2025, and how strategic policy and private sector agility are converging to place India among the top five global shipbuilding nations by 2047.

India is moving decisively away from fragmented, small-yard capacity toward Integrated Mega-Maritime Clusters and at hashtag , we are proud to be at the centre of this transformation. We aren't just building ships. We're building the ecosystem, supply chain, and talent base that will together define India's maritime future.

The maiden edition of Samarthya 2026, hosted by the of Naval Architects and General of Shipping, provided the answer: Collaboration.

The conclave served as a powerful catalyst, bringing together shipyards, owners, designers, and academia to solve for:

Indigenization – Moving from global reliance to local excellence.

Manufacturing Readiness – Bridging the gap between design and delivery.

Technology Adoption – Future-proofing our maritime ecosystem.

At SDHI, we believe capability is never built in isolation. It is forged through shared purpose and dialogue. We are proud to support this platform as it aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047.
