A recent paper published in MDPIโ€™s Journal of Imaging introduces a real-time blink detection system using 3D convolutional neural networks โ€” replacing traditional thresholding or facial geometry approaches.

By combining temporal eye-region tracking with a frame prediction accumulator and morphological segmentation, the model detects blinks in ~300 ms windows โ€” no manual thresholds, no heavy pre/post-processing.

These signal changes are key to non-invasive BCIs, enabling control without any physical movementโ€”just pure intent.
