Case Study | Tangent Pile Shoring System for Deep Excavation – Bangalore, Karnataka

in dense urban environments require reliable retaining systems that can ensure excavation stability, control ground movement, and enable safe basement construction within restricted site conditions.

For a deep excavation project in , Karnataka, a Tangent Pile Shoring System was adopted to facilitate basement construction in a constrained urban environment. The excavation extended to approximately 14 m below ground level, requiring a retaining system with adequate stiffness, embedment, and staged support to maintain stability during ex*****on.

Ground investigation indicated that groundwater was not encountered within the explored depth. As groundwater cut-off was not a governing requirement, a tangent pile system was considered suitable for the site conditions.

The retaining system consisted of 750 mm diameter bored piles constructed in contact with each other, forming a continuous pile wall to resist lateral earth pressures and support the excavation. The piles were embedded deeper to provide sufficient fixity and structural stability.

To ensure excavation stability during ex*****on:
▪ Two levels of raker beam supports were installed
▪ A continuous waler beam was provided along the pile face
▪ Raker beams were supported on reinforced concrete pedestals
▪ Excavation was carried out in controlled stages
▪ Support installation was progressively carried out as excavation advanced

The tangent pile shoring system performed effectively under restricted site conditions, enabling safe excavation while maintaining wall stability and minimizing ground movement.

The project demonstrates the effectiveness of tangent pile walls for deep excavations in urban environments where groundwater cut-off is not a primary requirement, but limited working space and proximity to surrounding structures demand a controlled and reliable excavation support system.
