When components designed conventionally are 3D printed, it leads to unwanted supports. This makes printing time longer. The removal of those unwanted supports makes post-processing difficult and time-consuming.

This is where design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) plays its role.

We, at Rapid DMLS, worked closely with Agnikul Cosmos, to optimize the design of their Agnilet engines for 3D printing, which reduced the supports required for printing their rocket engines, and made post-processing faster and easier, resulting in a better build.

We're glad that their engine has completed successful firing.

The reasons one prefers 3D printing over conventional methods like machining is best illustrated here.

First, the design of this component is slightly complicated for conventional methods.

Next, the component has a lightweight specification, which when 3D printed, reduces wastage of material.

Also, printing components in batches reduces the lead time and eliminates inventory management.

This picture is of the batch production of a 3D printed component used in fighter aircrafts for the Indian Air Force.

Localized machine manufacturing and localized powder manufacturing should ultimately bring down the cost of manufacturing 3D-printed parts.

The cost of automobiles should also come down once Metal Additive Manufacturing in Automotive Industries is considered as an integral manufacturing tool.

Although reaching this stage is quite a journey on its own, it is just one of the baby steps towards a sustainable future.

Electric vehicles need to be stronger and lighter in design which can be realized by incorporating Metal Additive Manufacturing in the Automotive Industry.

Metal 3D printing is cost-effective when used for the right applications.

The video shows several aluminium extrusion components each with varying thickness and varying cross-section 3D printed in one shot.

The components will be further subjected to Crash Test to arrive at the best working design.

These components can be alternatively manufactured through Deep Drawing process or Pressure Die Casting but turns out expensive and time consuming when the quantities are low.

En-route, we are happy to be crossing this checkpoint of receiving yet another Local Certification from the Indian Air Force for their first critical component manufactured through metal additive manufacturing.

The component has successfully gone through rigorous ground and flight testing, thus boosting the confidence of the Additive Manufacturing community.

Although the Aerospace and Automotive manufacturing Industry in India is slowly understanding and witnessing the advantages of Metal 3D Printing, there is still a common misconception that Metal 3D Printing is a one-step process.

It is often assumed that once the part is printed, it is ready to use. But in reality, a number of operations are carried out on the printed part to obtain the final functional part. These operations or steps are jointly termed as 'Post Processing'.
