Home is one of the three basic requirements of survival of human species. So honestly speaking, every culture and community have a dream to make their own sweet home. There are a few tips although.
1. Concept/ A Simple Idea-First you need to have an idea or concept of what kind of house you want to make, like a house with good ventilation and natural lighting, with all the interior spaces linked to the nature outside. So that you can always stay connected to nature outside your house or a house with all interior spaces merging into each other smoothly etc. etc.
2. Functional aspects/Site specific modification- A house is more of a utilitarian purpose as you live there 24x7x365. So you need to think all aspects according to the operation of all functions smoothly in all the spaces. A simple idea is changed into the site specific alterations, such as changing the sizes of spaces and accommodating windows and ventilators for natural light and ventilations.
3. Keep living areas in North ( good light for doing work and reading) and storage, bedrooms, toilets in South ( strong light and heat). North sunlight is better than harsh and direct Southern sunlight.
4. Try to efficiently minimize the movements through usable spaces. Doors should be placed to not to break linear movements. This way, you would differentiate the usage space and movement.
5. Try to keep kitchens, toilets, bathrooms and wash areas in one side, so that plumbing could be done efficiently.
6. Cross Ventilation is important for all habitable spaces. I would recommend ventilation is necessary in all areas, even your storage.
7. Future Extension-You must have idea of extension of house in future, so that you can leave some brick breaks to easily construct the extension of the house.
8.Construction Stage- You can save money by using locally available materials e.g. Bricks, Stones, etc. For foundation, you can use rough materials too. You can also reuse the building materials if available, e.g. timber, bricks, steel, wood, doors, ventilators etc.
9. Final Finishes- After construction or during construction, get electrical wiring and plumbing work done so that later you can finish it with plaster or final finishes.
10.General rules- Natural light can reach up to a direct length of 25 feet or 8 meters, so plan interior spaces for daylight accordingly. Windows and ventilators openings should not be less than 1/10 th of floor area of a space. So give openings accordingly.
Making a home is a unique experience, or dream for all class people. So, it must be designed with patience and thoughtfulness.
