“We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children” – Anon. Mason’s Ink strongly believes in contributing towards a more sustainable future through sensitive and sensible architecture. We follow a three pronged approach when it comes to designing buildings:
• Efficient resource management – promoting maximum use of materials from within the site, like soil.
• S

olar passive techniques inculcated within the design to minimize energy spent on HVAC.
• Effective space planning through design interventions
As the building construction industry accounts for 40% of the total energy consumed, Mason’s Ink works towards promoting and revitalizing alternate building technologies like mud blocks, rammed earth for walls, arches, vaults ,domes, filler slabs etc. thus reducing the use of materials with high embodied energy like RCC and steel. Architects Rosie Paul and Sridevi Changali established Mason’s Ink in September 2013. They believe that alternate technologies in building construction deserve a fresh perspective in terms of innovative application and design. Before setting up her own practice RosiePaul was the Head Architect at the Auroville Earth Institute, UNESCO Chair Earthen Architecture. With a penchant for energy efficient buildings, she specializes in earth technology and cost effective design. She has been involved with several projects executed using earth technologies both locally and internationally and has also represented The Earth Institute in conferences on Sustainable practices. She is currently an earth consultant to a few non profit organisations to help promote and spread awareness in Earth Construction. With a passion for Heritage conservation, Sridevi Changali has graduated from the University of York, UK with a masters in Historic Building Conservation. She has been associated with The Council for British archaeology and The York Archaeological Trust. She worked with INTACH, Pondicherry chapter as project co-ordinator and played a key role in the revision of the Listing and Grading of Heritage Buildings Pondicherry. She has also specialized in earth construction through the Auroville Earth Institute and been a part of a special conference held at the University of Bath, UK on the restoration of the earth component in Heritage structures.

Welcome and thank you to everyone who has joined us recently and are interested in the work we do!

As those who have been part of our journey already know- if you want to see how a bunch of us are going against the norm, questioning the materials used, going back to traditional, vernacular architecture practices, documenting the knowledge passed down before it is lost forever, combining it with modern methods and tools to build sustainably, address climate change and empower others - (especially other women who are most affected by climate change and their communities) -you are in the right place!

Here is a look back at our Changemakers feature where we talk about some of our early projects, building sustainable homes, answer our most asked questions and also discuss the origin of our firm’s name!

Rammed earth walls rise from the soil they are crafted with, in union with the land they stand on.
Sustainable, the layers of raw earth have a contemporary, rustic beauty and are always comfortable. Cool in summer and cozy in the winter, regulating temperature and filtering the air inside.

If you would like to know more about building with rammed earth walls or other earthen construction methods, check out our blog posts and many detailed publications on our website www.masonsinkstudio.com

Just google “ Masons Ink Blog Rammed Earth”
