CPUs or GPUs. What's your pick for running simulations? 💪🖥️❓

For Siemens EnergySiemens Energy, developing powerful turbomachines requires powerful solutions, so their teams chose GPUs, accelerating their simulations and ultimately achieving a 77% reduction in compute times. More below.

A recent goal of modifying traditional gas turbines to burn hydrogen as a fuel and provide reliable low-carbon and carbon-free power generation solutions meant engineers across stations would be working on designs for parts like compressors and combustors at the same time. If they performed all the necessary testing, iterations, analysis and validation with traditional CPU computing, finalizing a design would take weeks.

By choosing to run CFD simulations with Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software, accelerated by NVIDIANVIDIA GPUs, engineers performed complex turbine blade large‐eddy simulation (LES) workflows in a matter of hours without compromising speed or performance, leading to:

• Decreased design iteration turnaround times
• Increased design space exploration
• Higher-fidelity simulations with finer mesh and complex models
• Increased accuracy and predictability of simulations
• Increased cost savings from reduced engineering hours and project timelines

🎓 Xitadel Learning Lounge — Xitadel’s platform for collaborative learning and industry engagement — brings experts together to exchange ideas and explore emerging innovations.

We were pleased to host Prof. Ananthasuresh G K (IISc) for an insightful session on “Dynamic Self-Offloading Footwear and Digital Podiatry.”

The discussion highlighted the rising need for podiatric care, driven by the increasing prevalence of peripheral neuropathy and foot ulcers, primarily caused by diabetes in India and elsewhere. Prof. Ananthasuresh spoke about how Digital Podiatric Clinics (D-PoCs) can address this growing healthcare challenge, the technologies required to make D-PoCs effective, and the role of mechanics in developing novel therapeutic footwear and digital foot twins tailored for broader populations.
