In the past 12 years, Empoise has gained a reputation for specializing in designing complex, tech-packed products. However, occasionally we undertake projects that do not involve electronics or electro-mechanics.
One such project was our collaboration with Dorco, one of the world's largest shaver brands from South Korea. Dorco approached us with the task of creating an entry-level shaver for the Indian market. Despite the budget-conscious nature of the target market, Dorco wanted the new single blade razor to have a fresh and distinctive appeal, setting it apart from other available options.
We embraced the challenge of meeting all expectations, including design, functionality, ergonomics, production feasibility, cost, and the creation of an aspirational product. Through a series of relatively short yet intense user studies and industrial design sprints, we arrived at the final product showcased here.
During this process, we identified unique user needs and opportunities. We explored innovative designs, colors, materials, and finishes. The resulting design features an innovative handle that surpasses its counterparts in ergonomics, lacking any sharp edges and incorporating a grip pattern at critical touch points to ensure a confident and comfortable grip. We minimized manufacturing complexity and cost by eliminating side cores for molding.
The functional details that act as springs and latches for the existing blade unit were meticulously designed to create a distinctive visual identity. As the handle does not come in direct contact with sensitive facial skin, we explored environmentally friendly options such as post-consumer recycled plastic, wood-composite, and biodegradable plastic to minimize its environmental footprint.
In addition, we developed innovative packaging to maximize value. The protective cover for the blade is an injection-molded plastic that doubles as a small brush, featuring innovative injection-molded bristles that come handy for cleaning the blade.
Designing this razor was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for us, as it offered a refreshing departure from our typical projects.
