High energy radiation called 'gamma radiation', is radiation that human senses cannot detect naturally. Therefore, detecting gamma radiation requires the use of the most sensitive devise available (electronic circuits).

The PIN diode, a sensor wich is very low in noise level, is therefore required to measure incredibly low amount of signals produced by a gamma ray striking the sensor. The signal produced is then sent to an electronic circuit for signal processing and an output pulse is then produced when the electronic circuit recognizes the presence of incoming gamma radiation. Demonstrating these devices is a display of how advanced electronics provide you with the ability to measure invisible physical phenomena and to create useful data from it quantitatively.

Sensor technology, signal amplification and scientific instrumentation are a very interesting example of working together to produce a useful application for the real world.
