What is Expandable Polystyrene (EPS)

EPS consists of 98% air, has an excellent insulation value, is light yet rigid. Unlike other insulation materials, EPS also has minimal water absorption. Expandable polystyrene (EPS) foams have been known by the BASF trade name Styropor (or often Styrofoam in English) since the 1950s. Bead-shaped polystyrene granules are a raw material of EPS foams. They are impregnated with a propellant during the manufacturing process.

EPS granules are marketed for various processing purposes in certain size fractions with different propellant contents and optional flame protection. The size range of raw beads ranges from a few hundred microns to several millimetres, whereby the individual fractions are narrowly distributed. For example, raw beads in a size range from 200 microns to 400 microns are required for the production of EPS drinking cups with very thin walls. Larger moulded parts, such as blocks or plates, allow coarser granules; however, with clear requirements regarding the size distribution and a predetermined coarse grain that must not be exceeded.

Expandable Polystyrene, or EPS, is a rigid, lightweight plastic foam insulation made from polystyrene particles that are solid. The process of manufacturing polystyrene base material with small amounts of pentane gas dissolved into it allows for expansions. When heat, in the form of steam, is introduced to the gas, it expands to form completely closed EPS cells.

How do we classfiy EPS Material?

Regular Grades - High Expansion, Medium Grade, Fast Cycling

Flame Retardant - Specialized EPS grades that are flame retardant provide superior processing and product attributes. Unwavering unprocessed bead and excellent foam in second-time growth, rapid expansion is accompanied with relatively low density. Variety of block machines, automatic machines, and manual presses can all use it thanks to its wide operating range. Gorgeous, smooth look, fine cell. Minimal block shrinkage during molding. As with several expansions, a recommended 40–70 expansion ratio should be increased.

EPS (Expandable Polystyrene) is a lightweight, rigid plastic foam insulation material derived from solid polystyrene particles. The expansion process involves dissolving small amounts of pentane gas into the polystyrene, which, when exposed to heat and steam, expands to form closed cells. These cells can be up to 40 times the volume of the original polystyrene bead. The expanded beads are then molded into various shapes for different applications.

Key properties of EPS include:
