Established in 1921, the inaugural professional association was identified as the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association. Initially focused on "women's health," physical therapy had 274 members, with Mary McMillan serving as its first president. Notably, in 1922, the association underwent a name change to the American Physiotherapy Association, marking the inclusion of male members. Presently, the organization is recognized as the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), boasting a membership of over 95,000 in the United States alone.
