IEC 61000-4-2:2025 — What Changed?

The third edition of IEC 61000-4-2 was published in March 2025 and replaces the 2008 edition.

The revised standard introduces changes to ESD generator calibration, test setups, wearable devices, test-point selection, calibration procedures and measurement uncertainty.

Why Decibels Matter in EMC Measurements

In EMC testing, measurements are often expressed in decibels (dB). Because the scale is logarithmic, a small change in the dB value can represent a significant change in the actual signal level.

For example:

6 dB → approximately 2× the voltage or field amplitude
10 dB → 10× the power
20 dB → 10× the voltage or field amplitude
