Institution of Public Health Engineers (IPHE), India is a premier forum of Public Health & Environmental Engineers of the country. Established in 1972 as a modest society, today IPHE has 16 regional centres spread all over the country with headquarters office housed in
a three storied building located in a prestigious area of Salt Lake City, Kolkata. The main aim of IPHE is to bring about development in areas of work like, water and waste water treatment, sewage development, solid waste management, bio-medical waste management, environmental Impact assessment studies, rural & urban drinking water supply management, engineering project formulation & evaluation. Majumder after which the position was taken over by Mr. Dunglena followed by the present President Prof. Nath, Secretary-General of IPHE Shri. S. K. Neogi and the treasurer is Mr. S.K. Mukherjee. The Chennai chapter of IPHE is headed by Chairman Er. R. Ragunathan and Vice-Chairman Prof. P.K. Bhattacharya, Er. V.V. Sethuraman as the secretary and Dr. P. Shanmugam Jt.Secretary and Er. M. CENTRAL LEATHER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CLRI)
The World's largest Leather Research Institute was founded on 24 April, 1948 by Hon'ble Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, the then Minister for Industry and Supply, Government of India &Vice President of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. CSIR-CLRI has Prof. Asit Baran Mandal as the present Director. CLRI made an initiative with foresight to link technology system with both academy and industry. CLRI, today, is a central hub in Indian leather sector with direct roles in education, research, training, testing, designing, forecasting, planning, social empowerment and leading in science and technology relating to leather. ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT (CSIR-CLRI)
Environmental Technology division in CLRI helps Indian Leather Industry to treat the effluents and to manage the pollution and leather related Environmental problems. Chrome recovery and reuse, sludge management. Carbon- dioxide deliming, eco-friendly options for leather processing and effluents treatment. The R&D activities range from analysis of waste (for quantifying pollution load from tanneries), identification of bioresistent chemicals from tanneries, development of appropriate technologies for prevention of water and land pollution, development of tools for environment management around tannery clusters Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Audit(EA), and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and organizing training programme for Environmental Managers in operation and maintenance of Common Effluent treatment Plants(CETP) and Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor(UASB).
