Puducherry firm designs solar-powered portable lab
At a time when setting up an active solar powered system in mainstream residential complexes still proves to be a challenge, a Puducherry-based processing and instrumentation firm has designed a solar powered portable scientific laboratory-cum-house.
A 500-foot office-cum-research laboratory, it is made up of thick iron sheets, and gets power from the solar modules, which are set up on roof top of the portable structure.
The solar modules have about 1000 MW installed capacity, which is sufficient for meeting the energy requirements, such as running of electrical appliances fitted in the multi-purpose infrastructure.
The company, which has designed it on pilot basis, is all set to open it for public viewing at Gandhi Thidal on Beach Road here shortly.
“Our intensive Research and Development has made it possible to design solar powered portable laboratory-cum-house. The government’s subsidy for solar power and a drop in the cost of solar instruments are also reasons why the project is a successful one,” says P. Rangaraj, Chairman and Managing Director, Chemin C&I, Mettupalayam.
He added that structures such as portable house, site office, information centre were common in European countries, United States, as well as elsewhere. Since Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have large number of sunny days in a year, the company decided to start the portable house with solar power. The success of the project would definitely motivate residents and and industrial stakeholders to go for solar power for household requirements and office purposes. With suitable modifications, portable kiosks could be used for vending food, beverages, vegetables and groceries.
