What does it take to change a woman's livelihood?

A measuring tape?
A DrawBoyle?
Better-quality yarn?
Or simply the opportunity to learn something new?

For many rural women entrepreneurs, these small beginnings can lead to better products, higher incomes, and greater confidence.

Through the Udyamini Programme, we're helping turn small opportunities into lasting change.

In 2024, Minati Nath received 70 Assam lemon saplings through Grameen Sahara's program initiative.

What began as a small intervention soon took root in her farm and in her aspirations.

With dedication, care, and consistent effort, Minati nurtured each sapling, watching them grow season after season.

Today, those saplings have transformed into a thriving lemon orchard—filled with healthy, fruit-bearing trees and the promise of sustainable income.

Her farm is now preparing for market harvest, around 140 - 160 kgs with 150 lemon trees, opening new opportunities for livelihood and economic resilience.

Minoti's journey is a reminder that when the right support reaches the right hands, small beginnings can grow into lasting opportunities.

🌱 From saplings to sustainability.
🍋 From potential to prosperity.

This is the impact of community-led development.

This is the story of change at Grameen Sahara

A village of tomorrow can be shaped today.

Not by one person. Not by one initiative. But by a community that chooses to care.

Every conversation about conservation, every effort to protect natural resources, every step towards sustainable living, and every action that strengthens community awareness contributes to a better future.

The future of our villages depends on the choices we make today—for our environment, our livelihoods, and the generations that will follow.

🌱 Change begins with awareness.
🌍 Progress grows through collective action.

Yesterday, we celebrated World Environment Day. 🌎

Today, we reflect on a difficult reality. ⏳

This footage from Retzawl Village in Dima Hasao captures a landscape in transition.

Dima Hasao is one of Assam's greenest districts, with nearly 83% forest cover. These forests support livelihoods, regulate water sources, preserve biodiversity, and provide a habitat for many species.

Yet across many hill communities, jhum or shifting cultivation continues to be a primary source of sustenance. For generations, it has enabled families to grow food and survive in challenging terrain.

As populations grow and pressures on land increase, forests often have less time to regenerate between cultivation cycles. The consequences are visible, not only in the changing landscape, but also in the gradual loss of habitats and biodiversity.

This is not about choosing between people and forests. 🌿

It is about recognizing that the future of both is interconnected.

How do we ensure food security while protecting forests?
How do we support livelihoods while conserving biodiversity?
How do we create sustainable alternatives without leaving communities behind?

These are the conversations we need to have.

Every map tells a story—of available resources, unmet needs, opportunities for growth, and the collective vision of the community.

At Grameen Sahara, we believe that sustainable development starts with communities identifying their own strengths, resources, challenges, and aspirations. Through participatory social mapping exercises, our team works alongside villagers to understand local realities and co-create pathways for development.
