eMotor Design Principles: This course will cover brushless permanent magnet motor technology design principles. Brushless
permanent magnet motors are reshaping the world today with their extensive use in Wind Power, Electric Vehicles, Appliances
etc. eDrive Design Principles: Various motor technologies require special design principles, hardware configuration and algorithm. This course will cover motor drive design principles for brushed, brushless, reluctance and induction motors. Power Electronics Systems: Power Electronic Systems forms the backbone of various motor drive topologies. In this course, we
will cover advances in semiconductor and power electronic component materials, converter and drive topologies etc. Algorithm Design and Development: Every great software must be developed with a well thought out algorithm. However, in real
world this is not always the case. In this course, we will cover algorithm development for
various motor drives, MCU and DSP fundamentals, and Agile principle of software development. We will also cover model based
software development tools such as VISSIM. Simulation techniques would also be covered with such tools as PSPice, Simulink,
Simnon etc. Embedded C: Embedded C forms the backbone of most of the motor drives and power electronic systems. We will cover the
principles of C programming and effective differences in programming for 8-bit vs. 32-bit micro-controllers or Digital Signal
Processors. Hardware Design Principles: In this course, we will cover circuit schematics, printer circuit board layout and assembly. The
course will also cover analog as well as digital circuit design as it pertains to motor drives, power electronics and embedded
systems. Manufacturing Strategy: For great innovations to be realized, it is essential that we focus on basic principles of manufacturing
and understand supply chain strategy surrounding an innovative product. This course will cover those and in particular build an
in-depth understanding in evaluating suppliers, processes, materials, supply chain clusters and technologies. Communication Skills: It is critical that great innovators learn to communicate well. Without essential communication skills, one
misses a great many opportunities. Therefore, this course will cover spoken as well as written English. Focus will be on technical
paper and article writing, team communication, proposal preparation etc. Project Management Principles: All great innovations need brilliant project managers. Basic principles of project management
are simple and straight forward. This course will teach what is essential and critical in managing innovations. Product Certification Standards: In this day and age, all products must achieve certain certification to be accepted. These
certification standards have evolved over last several decades and mainly focus on EMI/EMC compliance, consumer safety in
terms of fire, shock etc. Some of the key UL, IEC, TUV standards for Automotive, Medical, Consumer applications would be
covered in this course to prepare the innovator of the future for the current and future regulatory environment.

Accurate electromagnetic simulation tools are indispensable for motor design and analysis, particularly during early-stage development and optimization.

While commercial finite element (FE) tools are widely adopted in the industry, their high cost and licensing restrictions limit access for startups, academia, and prototyping efforts.

Finite Element Method Magnetics (FEMM) offers a compelling alternative: a free, open-source 2D solver for low-frequency electromagnetic problems.

FEMMโ€™s functionality is well-suited for modeling rotating machines, transformers, actuators, and other magnetic systems.

Its effectiveness is significantly enhanced with MATLAB to automate multi-point simulation, parameter sweeps, and post-processing.

FEMM and MATLAB create a lightweight yet powerful environment for electromagnetic design and analysis.

This article documents a structured approach for using FEMM and MATLAB to design and evaluate a high-torque outer rotor motor. It presents a replicable workflow that includes defining the geometry and materials, solving for magnetic fields, and calculating torque and losses, followed by MATLAB scripting for automated simulation and data extraction.

This method particularly benefits power electronics researchers and motor designers aiming to implement an agile development cycle.

The combined FEMM-MATLAB approach enables deeper insights into field behaviors, material performance, and electromagnetic efficiency by reducing simulation time and providing real-time parameter tuning.

The analysis is extendable to fractional-slot, concentrated winding configurations, and other topologies.
