UNUC LEGAL PARAMOUNT in collaboration with UNUC LEGAL LLP(Knowledge Partner) and The Dais (Youth Partners) are organising one -day Seminar on "Renewable Energy & Law: Contemporary Issues & Challenges in India"

Thursday, June 25, 2015, New Delhi at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. INTRODUCTION

At present, there is an urgent need to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, dramatically reduce wa

sted energy, and significantly shift our power supplies from oil, coal, and natural gas to wind, solar, geothermal, and other renewable energy sources. CONCEPT NOTE:

As has been stressed by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendera Modi, “We need a saffron revolution that focuses on renewable energy sources such as solar energy, to meet India’s growing energy demand.”
India is world 4th largest energy consumer accounting nearly 3.4% of global energy consumption. This demand is growing with average of 3.6 % Per annum from last 30 years. Consequently, our country is heavily dependent on generation of electricity through thermal power such as coal and nuclear, which is exhaustible due to excessive use. Conventional resources viz. hydro energy solar energy, hydrogen and fuel cells, tidal energy, geothermal and biomass are the cheaper and reliable sources of energy which are practically infinite and cannot be depleted, unlike their non-renewable counterparts, which are likely to run out if not used judiciously. Moreover such conventional resources do not produce harmful waste like carbon di-oxide, carbon monoxide and carcinogenic pollutants. Thus, being a more reliable, greener and cost effective source for generating electricity. Which will lead to economic dislocations and hardship if they become the only power source for the future. THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR IS TO:

(a) Create awareness / share the knowledge on renewable energy and law and emerging trends. (b) To understand and foresee the emerging trends in law policy mechanism.

· To facilitate debate and seek suggestions as to whether percentages for the procurement of renewable energy should only be limited to distribution companies or should be extended to include captive users and open access consumers?

· What should be the operating framework for the implementation of its Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) order? Issue of Power procurement from Renewable Sources by Distribution Licensee. Issue of percentage of electricity proposed to be purchased from renewable sources. What should be Renewable Obligations and Certificates. Formation of National Renewable Energy Council and its Role. Penalties and Waiver. Comparison to Renewable Energy laws in other countries. For suggestions & Queries mail us to [email protected].
