⚡ Advancing Flexible Thermal Power for India’s Energy Transition – Two Successful Workshops Completed

Two technical workshops under the motto “Technical Pioneers of the Energy Transition” were successfully conducted in Nagpur (26 November) and Hyderabad (28 November), marking an important milestone in strengthening Indo-German cooperation on thermal power flexibilisation and the integration of higher shares of renewable energy.

Organised by the Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office (IGEF-SO) in cooperation with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), EEC India, and vgbe energy e.V., the workshops brought together national and international experts from government, utilities, associations, and industry.

🔍 Why Flexibility Matters

As India accelerates renewable energy deployment, enhancing the flexibility of the existing thermal fleet has become essential. Flexible coal-fired power plants enable smoother integration of variable solar and wind generation, supporting a more reliable, sustainable, and resilient power system.

🌟 Key Highlights

✔️ In-depth technical exchanges on flexible operation strategies
✔️ Global best practices presented by leading experts
✔️ Practical insights from utilities and plant operators
✔️ Discussions on policy, regulation, and future readiness
✔️ Strengthened Indo-German collaboration on system flexibility

The workshops facilitated meaningful technical dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the identification of future cooperation pathways. Appreciation is extended to all speakers, delegates, and partners for their valuable contributions.

These efforts contribute to advancing a cleaner, more flexible, and resilient energy future.

🌾 🚗 ⚡ How Far Can You Go with 1 Hectare Land? – on for

In the production of renewable fuels, not all land potential is used equally. Findings from the latest research by the DBFZ (German Biomass Research Center) (https://www.linkedin.com/company/dbfz/) reveal a striking difference.

The DBFZ has assessed the mileage potential of various fuels produced from electricity, hydrogen, or bioethanol on one hectare of arable land in India and examined their use in the transport sector.

🔋Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) powered by PV can drive up to 9 million km per hectare per year (km/ha/year) — almost 100 times more than bioethanol-fueled internal combustion vehicles.

☀️ Agrivoltaics comes close, enabling around 3.8 million km/ha/year mileage in a BEV, while providing co-benefits such as agricultural production and dual income opportunities for farmers.

💧 Green hydrogen produced from photovoltaic and used in fuel cell vehicles has a range of ~3 million km/ha/year, whereas hydrogen produced from biomass has a range of 110 thousand km/ha/year.

🎋 Bioethanol produced from wheat and straw, or from short-rotation coppice, trails far behind, with a yield of 95 thousand km/ha/year.

💡 Key takeaway: Using electricity directly from PV, especially in combination with agrivoltaics, delivers the highest land-use efficiency for . This is an essential insight for regions with limited available land and a requirement to prioritise food production, such as India.

For further insights into how agrivoltaics can boost land productivity and support green hydrogen production, take a look at the study 'Harvesting Crops and Molecules: Green Hydrogen Production with Agrivoltaics' here:https://energyforum.in/fileadmin/india/media_elements/publications/Green_Hydrogen_Production_with_Agrivoltaics/Green_Hydrogen_Production_Agrivoltaics.pdf

At the , the Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office (IGEF-SO) launched its latest study, “Harvesting Crops and Molecules – Green Hydrogen Production with Agrivoltaics”, during the knowledge session held on 31 October 2025 in the Solarise Hall.

The study was launched by Shri Manu Srivastava, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary & Commissioner, New & Renewable Energy Department, along with another panelist, marking an important step towards exploring the synergies between Green Hydrogen (GH2) and Agrivoltaics (AgriPV) in India’s clean energy journey.

India stands at a pivotal moment in its pursuit of energy independence and climate resilience. As the country advances toward energy independence by 2047 and net-zero emissions by 2070, integrating Green Hydrogen (GH2) production with Agrivoltaics (AgriPV) offers a transformative pathway for land-efficient, inclusive, and sustainable growth.

Developed by IGEF-SO and executed by Grant Thornton Bharat, this study explores synergies between AgriPV and GH2 systems in the Indian context — featuring:
🔹 International case studies and deployment models
🔹 Site selection frameworks based on land, water, and crop patterns
🔹 Business cases across large, medium, and small-scale applications

The integrated AgriPV-GH2 approach can unlock new opportunities from decentralised clean hydrogen generation and green fertiliser production to improved land productivity and additional income streams for farmers.
