Indo-German Energy Forum Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) is a dialogue to share state-of-the-art knowledge, support private sector actions and create framework conditions.

To enhance and deepen cooperation between India and Germany in the energy sector, the German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh established the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) at the Hannover Fair in April 2006. The main objectives of the IGEF are
• To rehabilitate and modernise thermal power plants
• To encourage the use of clean energy sources
• To disseminate climate-friendly technologies on the energy supply and demand side. The dialogue focuses on exchanging knowledge, promoting private sector activities and putting in place an enabling environment to further develop the markets for efficient thermal power plant technologies, energy efficiency and renewable energies in India and Germany.

⛏️ Strengthening Cooperation on

Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office (IGEF-SO) and the Council for Critical Minerals Development in the Global South brought together representatives from government, industry, academia and international organisations to discuss building more resilient critical mineral supply chains.

Held on 7 August in New Delhi, the networking reception took place alongside the India-Global South Convening on Clean Technology Minerals & Supply Chains and the visit of a German business delegation led by VDMA Mining & Minerals.

The evening also marked the launch of “Critical Minerals for India’s Clean Energy Journey”, a report looking at the role of critical minerals in India’s clean energy transition and opportunities for international cooperation.

⛏️ Indo-German cooperation on critical minerals

This week, Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office (IGEF-SO) and its partners hosted the Indo-German Business Roundtable on Critical Mineral Processing in New Delhi, alongside the visit of a German business delegation led by VDMA Mining & Minerals.

The discussion focused on a practical question: where can Indian and German companies work together across the critical minerals value chain?

German companies Dorfner ANZAPLAN GmbH, K-UTEC AG SALT TECHNOLOGIES, Christian Pfeiffer India Pvt. Ltd., India, Technologies Pvt. Ltd., and DMT GmbH & Co. KG presented their technologies and expertise, followed by direct B2B discussions with Indian industry representatives.

Thank you to Ms. Julia Schellhaas, LL.M. (German Embassy New Delhi), Mr. Stephan Oehme (VDMA Mining & Minerals), Dr Alix Peterson Zwane (Duke University), as well as our partners ICF, Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, KfW, and the Council for Critical Minerals Development in the Global South, and all the participants who joined the discussion.

We continue the conversation this evening with the Networking Reception on International Business Cooperation in Critical Mineral Supply Chains and the launch of the report “Critical Minerals for India’s Clean Energy Journey”.

For over 20 years, the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) has served as the official platform for energy cooperation between and , fostering policy dialogue, technical cooperation, and knowledge exchange in support of the clean energy transition.

To mark its 20th anniversary, IGEF is sharing a commemorative film featuring policymakers, industry leaders, and long-standing partners who have contributed to the Indo-German Energy Partnership. The film highlights two decades of cooperation across renewable energy, energy efficiency, green hydrogen, power system transformation, and agrivoltaics.

As the Indo-German Energy Forum marks 20 years of partnership, we continue to strengthen Indo-German cooperation through knowledge exchange and practical dialogue on the energy transition.

Three webinars. One shared goal: advancing the transition towards a low-carbon industry.

The Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) Support Office, in collaboration with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) and the German Energy Agency (dena), successfully delivered the three-part webinar series, "Pathways to Low-Carbon Industry – Good Practices and Experiences from Germany and the EU."

Bringing together experts from India and Germany, the series explored practical approaches, policy frameworks, and innovative technologies to support industrial decarbonisation. Discussions covered:

⚡New renewable energy figures from India and Germany highlight how quickly the energy transition is advancing - though the two countries are navigating very different realities.

India added a record 55 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity in FY 2025/26, driven by rapid solar deployment and accelerating wind expansion. Utility-scale solar accounted for 33.8 GW, followed by rooftop PV at 8.7 GW and wind at 6.1 GW.

The pace of growth reflects the scale of India’s rising energy demand and the country’s push to expand clean power generation quickly. Grid-connected electricity generation reached 1,840 BU (TWh), with 26% coming from fossil-free sources.

Germany, meanwhile, is increasingly focused on integrating high shares of renewables into the grid while continuing the phase-out of fossil fuel plants. Renewables now account for around 58% of electricity generation, with overall electricity demand remaining relatively stable. Renewable additions in 2025 totalled around 22 GW, including roughly 8 GW each from utility-scale solar and rooftop PV installations. Wind additions rose to 5 GW - the country’s highest level since 2017.

Different systems. Different priorities. But a shared direction towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future.

Celebrating 20 years of the Indo-German Energy Forum 🎉

Since its launch in 2006 by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Forum has evolved from a high-level dialogue into a dynamic platform connecting governments, industry, and experts across India and Germany.

Driven by strong institutional collaboration between Germany and India, and implemented with the support of BEE, KfW and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the partnership has continued to evolve with the changing energy landscape.

From energy security and efficiency to emerging areas such as green hydrogen, energy storage and AgriPV, the Indo-German Energy Forum continues to support the energy transition.

As part of the 20 year celebrations, every month we will revisit the themes shaping today’s energy sector and where cooperation is headed next.
